I don't like the concept of the 12 step program but if it works it works. Best thing I ever did was move states and surrounded myself by new people who don't know me or my past.
I'm in AA and have been sober for two years but I still answered "there is more than one way."
Whenever I like something, I feel the urge to convince other people that they should like it too. So I'd like to say "12-step is the best method" but, browsing the scientific literature, I couldn't find anything to support that claim
I do think that, when people are heavily into their addiction, the best thing to do is something - anything: psychotherapy, 12-stepping, meditation, medication, moderation, relocation, codependency, workaholism, marijuana, marriage, or straight-up white-knuckle abstinence. Obviously, some methods will work better than others. You just want to maintain a little hope that something - anything - will help you.
Addiction is addiction. It's not going to be broken easily no matter what method you use.
There's no cure for addiction, they just try to turn people to "God", addiction can only be overcome if the addict decides to overcome it. Simple as that.
aa/na is a load of god pushing crap. all or nothing. my mate was doing well, had one drink, his new 12 step way of thinking convinced him he had failed so he got back on the crack.
i drank every day from 21-27, might have missed a couple, and smoked pot from 14-27 almost constantly. i stopped both dead in their tracks but it was thanks to a, uh.. stimulant.
