Everyone has their favorite positions and what feels good for one may not feel good for another. If you didn't like it from behind simply because you didn't really enjoy it I would say to at least do it occasionally to please him. BUT you don't like it because it's painful and I think you should definitely let him know so perhaps you two can find a pleasing solution.
Agreeing with the above comments, he is going in too deep for you. The average vagina can normally take about 5 in comfortably. Most women don't enjoy deep penetration, but some do(much to my disappointment). But if you decide to do it doggy, don't stick your rear all the way out.
