Does it feel awkward to ask people their name?

Whenever I introduce myself & ask their name it feels awkward. I forget within seconds. Maybe it's the timing but I feel that if you don't ask someones name till the end of the conversation it feels more natural. Maybe you have to get to know them first and then ask. Anyone else feel like this?

I always tell people that I might forget their name so they don't get offended later. If you just introduce yourself, people usually introduce themselves. If they don't they're usually either unfriendly or nervous and forgot.

I don't think it's normal or not normal the way you feel. It just is.

I'll usually warn them ahead of time that I'm bad with names so they know to expect. Perhaps you should try that?

Sometimes I tell people that I have the disease where I can't remember people's faces, then they tend not to feel so bad when I forget their name.

You're more likely to remember the person's name if you repeat it at the first introduction: as in "Hi, I'm x, what's your name?" and then when you have the name, "pleased to meet you y". It looks very formal written down but done with a smile it's really not.

IF you still forget it, it's OK and common to just say you're bad with names, what's your name again? If you're flirting, also ok to say you didn't forget him or her, just the name

All the time. I once spent half an hour talking to this one girl and still didn't know her name.

What's really awkward is when they've already told you their name and you've forgotten it before the conversation ends. You really want to know, but how do you ask?
