Does it annoy anyone else when people say asians and Indians when Indians are Asian?

It really gets to me when someone's like oh there was an "Asian guy and an Indian guy there" like what? Bro Indians are Asians.

That's like saying there's snow outside and also white stuff falling from the sky

I find it really annoying in general when people use the term "Asian" so vaguely. Asia is huge and diverse.

"There was an Asian guy in the queue next to me and..." what do you mean? His race is obviously relevant to the anecdote, or you wouldn't have mentioned it, and yet you've chosen to be so fucking vague that I have no idea what you mean - was he Japanese? Bangladeshi? Vietnamese? Sri Lankan? At least narrow it down to East/ West Asian if you aren't sure of the exact country.

Yeah it slightly annoys me. I blame my education system, it truly sucks.

Blame the fact that humans have been differentiating people based on color for thousands of years. Congratulations you are a different color thus are called something different.

That’s true but it’s not always the case, I met people who didn’t know India was in Asia, they thought it was in Europe. It’s why I blame my education system, they fail to teach students and just want them to graduate, doesn’t matter to them if the kids barely passed their grades or don’t know jack shit.

  • I have quirky pet peeves too

You understand the thought process though, right? Like the main differences between Indians and Asians as a whole

I try to keep them to myself, it doesn't usually end well for me if I mention and I've tried several ways

Another one for ya, you ever notice how Egyptians are like never referred to as African

Ones I always notice that always make me mad are when who and whom and "subject" and I and me and "direct object" are used incorrectly (like the song him and I, it's really "it's me and him" unless she lengthens the sentence to "it's him and I who are going to be together forever")

Oh my gosh hahaha, that was literally my first thought when I read this post. People think Egypt is in the middle east because it's desert-y & they know nothing of the civilization cradle

Anyways, OP, yeah people are dumb. You can get riled up about semantics, but I've found it quite beneficial for me to categorize stupidity.

You got your willfully harmful stupidity (black people deserve to die, women shouldn't have rights, etc etc). That's definitely worthy of anger

But then you have benign stupidity...Egypt is in the middle east! Indians aren't asian! The earth is flat!

Annoying? Stupid? Sure it is, but it's not willfully destructive. Life's a lot easier when you don't let yourself get riled up by every little thing. Just laugh about it & move on

Asian specifically refers to yellow people with slanted eyes. Indians are seen as something completely separate, even though India is in asia. Same with arabs.

The thing is that the word "Asians" is often used as a word to refer to people from China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, countries of Southeast Asia, etc.

Also, while India is located in Asia, people from India are said to be their own race.

Ah yes all these asian countries that all equally hate eachother.

Most arabs are technically asians too (i think) and we dont call them asians. Its complex. Indian is much more specific. If someone said "look at that asian guy" and it was an indian id be like where i dont see him

Arabs are technically from Asia Minor, which is an Asian subcontinent. So, still technically Asian.

I mean from an american perspective being called north american is way too vague. So is calling people asians. But you did get an instantaneous idea of what I looked like from where I lived.

Stereotypes and labels makes things easier on the brain to sort.

I actually get it. Ethnically Indian people do look noticeably different to what most people think of when they hear "Asian". Maybe "East Asian" would be better. Or maybe we should bring back "Oriental".

I never understood what's wrong with the word "oriental." I prefer the word "Oriental" because of this very reason. Though I'm not Asian or Oriental.

Literally all it means is "eastern". I don't know why people would be offended by that. Occidental means western.

I think that it's because people belive oriental is the same as exotic. Which to be fair was true for the longest of time.

So now that you apply exotic as a triat to people its racist.

It depends on the part of the world you are from. In the UK for example, "Asian" usually refers to Indians and other South Asians as there is more of them there than East Asians. While in America, it is the opposite.

Yellow, whit or brown skin. We judge them all.

I think it might be because of the strong cultural differences. When people say Asian they are more talking of Taiwan, Chinese, Japanese. Apposed to cultures which seem more middle eastern like Muslims, Hinduism, Jewish type of cultures. Than we have what we consider "Western culture" which is anything that is not East Asia, or middle eastern type of influences. Which include all of Europe, Canada and the USA. We also have South American which I not sure where they would fit in or if we have a category for them specifically as they would likely be considered "Latin" Culture. Now people often confuse Indian and Muslim. Which while not being the same thing, have similar influences. Like wearing a head piece, similar dress, similar foods, writing styles.

No it does not bother me after all isn't it saying their ethnicity without being specific?

Theres a billion indians as well as they are a different color. That's racist, well that's how people have been distinguishing ethnicity since forever.
