Does hearing people call each other "darling" make you puke?

I hate that whole "darling" thing, it really gives me the shits when I hears folk say it, even if they're like really old folk it still sounds so phoney, like they only say it because they think they're supposed to. If I hear someone call their partner Darling it makes me grind my teeth, clench my buttocks and flare my nostrils involuntarily. Okay, so everyone says it on TV and in plays etc., but if someone I actually know says it to their partner, I just shudder, it's such stupid moronic bullshit, if someone called me Darling I'd wonder what the hell was wrong with them or else I'd think they was being sarcastic. Hows about you?

It's okay in movies but in real life it sounds fake & embarrassing 27

I'd go with I don't really care as long as they don't say it to me.

I think this poll is somewhat biased since it mostly contains insults against people who use "Darling"

If you don't like it fine... but if others enjoy it, it's their choice. Ain't your relationship.

Also... if a man says "darlin'" with a drawl that can be pretty sexy.

You sounds like you're still pretty young. I remember back when I was in high school, a couple of our teachers were husband and wife, and during the breaks you could see them walking together, holding hands. As teenagers we used to laugh a lot about this, but now that years gone by, I believe that it was actually very sweet.

  • It's better than what my ex used to call me.

    "Shuggum wuggums"

Try being called that in public.

I only call my fiancé "darling" if we haven't talked since the morning before, or if we're fighting.. I usually call him stuff like "hunny bunny" "hunny bunches" "Blue Eyes" and "cutie bum" ;)

Only someone who never watched Blackadder would show such disrespect to poor Darling.

I think it depends on the person.
    Does it suite their personality?
Is it something they would normally say, or did they get the impression that they should from someone or something else?

The only issue I have is that it seems a bit old-fashioned, but if it seems natural for that person to use it, then it's okay.

I wouldn't ever use it myself, it just doesn't suit me.

I only like hearing it in AbFab otherwise it really would depend. If you're calling your significant lover that or vice-versa, it's fine and very sweet. When snooty women say it, it can be very annoying.
