Does he like me as more than just a friend?

To give some back story here: I have a friend I met last year when I started college (we're in the same department). We seemed to becoming very close; studying together, laying together watching movies, etc. He enjoys making me blush and tickling me and does seem do be over-protective and jealous when other guys are around. This leads me to believe that he likes me; however, he's mentioned before that he likes this other girl from back home. When she comes up in conversation his personality seems to do a complete 180. I'm not really sure what this means and it's left me rather confused. A bit of help would be appreciated.

He obviously likes this other girl. 12

    You're in college. Ask him.

I don't think he knows what he wants. I think he probably likes the both of you, and he's waiting for that other girl, but since he can't have her, because shes probably not coming for him, he fills that time up with you. And without him planning on it, he might be falling for you at the same time. And dappled is right. He could aso be so close with you, that you're like a sister to him.

Well, it could be a few things. One, it's possible to like two people at the same time. Two, he might be using a friend back home to judge your reaction and see if you're jealous. Three, you may have misjudged your relationship and he sees you more like a sister. Or four, something else that I haven't even considered.

You don't need to be blunt or interrogative but there are ways of hinting things without losing too much face if the hints aren't met with the reaction you'd prefer.

Thank you all so much! You've definitely given me a better perspective on this. I just wish he lived closer so I could at least try to drop a few hints...

I want to thank everyone that commented, it was all very reassuring. ^^

I asked him a few days ago how he felt...He was so sweet about it. He said that he was glad I told him and flattered but thinks of me as more of a sister that he can always turn to. And I think I'm okay with that. I mean I'm a little heartbroken but at least he doesn't hate me. ^^

I feel like he is confused and is not sure what he wants. He would of asked you out if that was sure that he wanted to be with you. I would talk to him. Tell him that you are confused about your feelings for him. Clearly some people do not make good friends. If he cares about your friendship then he will not leave you hanging. If he gets mad at you for saying anything, he will lash out you as if you have done something wrong. If that happens, he is not worth having as a friend anyway. No matter what, if he cares, he will be honest with you. Maybe he is not sure how you feel about him. Sometimes a man needs more than a hint. Reguardless, you should talk to him about it no matter what what the outcome is. It is always better to know the truth even if it is not what the answer you were hoping for.

"He not sure what he wants himself."

    That's what I'm thinking too.

Although Dappled has an excellent point - he may like you a lot, even love you, but not romantically.

I'd say just go slowly. If it's meant to be then it will happen.
