Does food taste better when grown yourself or when stolen?

People always say fruits and vegetables taste best home grown, but I’ve also heard people say things taste good when you steal them too, mostly because the thrill of it though.

Which do you think?

When we were young, we once nicked a pint of milk from a farm. It was the the best damn pint of milk I've ever had.

It tastes best after being marinated in the bottom of a dumpster.

I know sandwiches taste better if someone else has made them.

Never heard anyone say that food tastes better when stolen, but then I don't hang out with food-thieves.

I can just about buy that homegrown food tastes better because it's very fresh and because commercial varieties of fruit and vegetables have been bred for easy harvesting and long shelf-life rather than flavour. Also, taste is very subjective, and if you've planted something, tended it and watched it grow, and then harvested it personally, you have an investment in the food and it's normal for people to want their efforts to be worthwhile.

Maybe something similar happens when you steal food. You're taking a risk when you thieve, so you want to believe that the pay-off makes the risk worth running.
