Does being repulsed by a certain culture make me racist?

I don't think of myself as a racist person, but lately I was sharing my views and opinions with someone and they got extremely offended and called me a racist. I was deeply hurt and shocked by this.

The thing is, I have NOTHING against any other ethnicity/race. What I am 'against' is a certain culture that happens to be associated with a certain nationality. I don't agree with the values of that society in general, not that I dislike any one of the actual people who belong to that world, it's that the cultural ideals themselves disgust me. I'm not a hater. I don't hate anyone, and I believe everyone should be treated equally and given equal rights. I just REALLY wish that some societies and cultures, even my own, would change. Was this person I was talking to over-reacting or being too PC by calling me a racist just because I was talking about a foreign culture negatively and not our own, or do I really need to rethink my views?

You're definitely a racist and you need to change 4
You're borderline racist, and I'd rethink my position if I were you 4
You're not racist per se, but you should watch what you say 5
You were being insensitive perhaps, but I'd have nothing against you 5
You're not racist at all, and that person was over-reacting 3
That person was being too sensitive about what didn't concern them 3
I'm with you. I don't hate anyone, but I'm against certain cultures 8
I don't discriminate, I think the entire world is terrifying 1
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

What culture was it? I'm just curious.

I'm repulsed by lots of cultural customs... From eating your relatives' brains to producing baby girls ears when they are born. It's normal to dislike certain customs, not racist.

    • I believe I have the right to my opinions, but I do feel guilt about having opinions that have the power to offend, somehow. I hate offending people, but it doesn't change the fact that I am myself offended by certain customs and ways of life. There is good and beauty in every culture too of course, but sometimes it's overshadowed by something horrifying. If no one questioned anything, the world would never change for the better.

Plenty of cultural practices are wrong. I'm pretty discriminatory against Muslims and I don't think anything is going to change that. I just don't talk about it openly. I think it's wrong to discriminate based on sex or color.... It doesn't seem as wrong to discriminate based on religion or culture. Those are choices.

Don't feel guilty for having thoughts. Only acting on bad thoughts:)

Opinions will always offend, because someone will always take them personally.
The only thing you can really do is try your best to understand what brings on such customs and don't kick your own ass about what you can't comprehend.
For example, I can't wrap my head around the appeal of twerking. I start to try but then my brain becomes numb. So then I say to myself, "Who fucking cares about these awkward new trends?" Followed by a feeling of peace.

So, don't give a shit about his opinion of your opinion and then you can be happy.

I dunno dude, you seem a tad bit racist hidden with your paranoia, you claim that you're all for equality of the races/ethnicity yet you hate a certain culture filled with a different nationality.. It is a different thing yes, but it's still a culture filled with a different race. You can't really hate an entire culture for what they do.. Just saying, I'd be careful with what I'd say if I were you

"What I am 'against' is a certain culture that happens to be associated with a certain nationality."

I think this is the key sentence. Why is it associated with a certain nationality? Is this association correct?

However, it is not xenophobic or racist to criticize bad ideas, which are part of a culture. That is how bad traditions are overthrown - by criticism.

Muslim immigrants in Europe have been incorrectly accusing Europeans of racism, when in fact Europeans are simply culturally intolerant. Muslims absolutely have the obligation to assimilate and adopt the key western values that make democratic governments possible. Sharia law does none of this. Only moderate Islam will work.

I am a Cultural Intolerant, NOT a racist. Either burn your burkas, or go back to the slavery in the Middle East that is tolerated by misinterpreting the prophet Mohammed.

Though the Aztecs were an incredible culture, their human sacrifices are a huge turn off to me and the idea of it disgusts me thoroughly. I don't hate them, but I wouldn't want to be friends with those who participate in something so abhorrent to me.
I love to share experiences with friends and I don't see how I could politely avoid an invite to one of these ceremonies, without it seeming to be a put down of their ways and possibly hurting their feelings. It's a position I'd not want to be in.
So, does that make me racist? I honestly don't know.

  • I don't know how someone can be entirely against a culture but I can get what you mean if you're against certain things a culture does that you think makes the rest of the aspects of the culture irrelevent.

You're not racist but you should watch what you say, not because what you say is "wrong" (it might be, I don't know) but because there are too many over-sensitive people with the PC mentality that won't take kindly to your views and perhaps give you a hard time.

I wouldn't say you're racist for what you explained.

    • Lately, I've been becoming more "mouthy" and I think I'm feeling guilty about that. But like I told someone else, nothing changes if nothing's questioned. There are great aspects to every culture, but it's true that some customs deeply bother or disturb me.

No, it's not racist. Certain cultures conflict with each other and that's just the way it is. However, if you don't agree with a certain culture that shouldn't give you the the right to badmouth it. As far as I'm concerned there is no "correct" way to live. Learn to respect and accept differences.

Nothing wrong with hate. We'll start fighting again eventually and when that happens all this won't matter.

Well, if hating certain people or cruelty to animals (or anything evil) is part of that culture, yes it is normal. You might want to avoid Tumblr though, the "social justice warriors" get way too defensive about things that don't even concern them. I don't mean to sound insensitive, but no one gets to decide what's offensive to a whole group of people, especially one you're not part of. Sorry but it's true.

Okay, I meant specifically you don't get to decide what people of OTHER ethnic/social groups should be offended by. It's different if it's your own. Maybe I do need to clarify more, but you shouldn't assume.
