Does anyone think that the is it normal community is like a culture of its own

Over the time spent on this site, I've gotten the impression that this community has its own culture. The prevailing perspectives, attitudes to certain topics, and other subjects seem to be quite different from what you would get from IRL or even most different forums and sites. I mean for example, the is it normal community seems to be nearly completely liberal and atheist, when in reality liberals don't even account for 1/2 of the USA (of whom the majority of is it normal is from) and atheists 2% of the world; I'm not criticizing or attacking atheism or liberalism but you get the point. Additionally, when I ask on is it normal I often get voted normal when IRL I ask and people say it's not, and vice versa too. It seems like the is it normal users tend to be closer to one another in terms of attitudes than other places.

Tl;dr: I kind of think that IIN's attitudes is kind of like a culture of itself.

Perhaps this site just attracts certain types.

Atheist only make up 2%? That seems low.

Most people probably found this site by searching is "something something" normal on a search engine. Most people here would therefore be people who have suffered criticism, and that criticized group is here, and that is why many of us are similar.

Yeah but wouldn't similar people do such a search? People who are different, wouldn't bother to ask.

    • Non-religious people make up about 16% of the world. 12.5% of all non-religious people are atheist.

          That's 12.5% OF the remaining 16%

          .125 x .16 = .02

Not really its own culture, really just a bunch of liberal kids with nothing else to do. I'm just here to annoy them.

I agree, though I think all message boards develop their own culture over time.

Also, I'm not liberal or atheist. I'm anarchist and christian. I didn't know there were a ton of liberal atheists around, since I rarely read up on political or religious affiliations.

Well sure, it's an internet culture. Also, the site caters to a more liberal mindset as well as to younger people. Can you really see a conservative person being open minded enough to ask the types of questions you see on here? the conservative people I know wouldn't get past two sentences on this site before being freaked out.

Younger people tend to be more liberal in general. As people age, they become more conservative. I can't tell you how many girls I went to high school with that had abortions because they didn't understand the concept of a condemn, only now to be the biggest hypocritical anti abortion promoters. They were young and idealistic, but at some point they turned into conservatives.

I've always been liberal but even I see myself getting a little conservative as I age. However I will never actually be a conservative. Fiscally conservative maybe, but never socially.
