Do you thumb comments because of who the user is?

Do you see a user you dislike and thumb their comments down whenever you see them regardless of what they write?

Do you also thumb all the other comments up in order to push that user's comments as far down the list a possible?

Or do you thumb all comments up because you want to spread good cheer?

Do you thumb up only users you like personally?

No, definitely not. That's sort of pathetic and really quite mean, in my opinion. I rarely thumb down comments now anyway. The vast majority of my thumbs are up ones. I thumb up users I'm not majorly keen on. I don't really dislike anyone here much anyway. Either way, it's the comment you should be thumbing, not the user.

I do think people do this, though, and it's annoying. The amount of times I have to thumb up comments with a 0 or lower, just because they don't deserve to be down voted. Sometimes they're comments which I wouldn't have thumbed up, but because they've been thumbed down for silly reasons, I thumb it up.

This makes it sound like I take thumbing very seriously, ha:P. I don't really. I'm just generous with my thumbs up. Although, sometimes I forget. Doesn't matter that much either way.

      Thumbs up to you, banana.

    • Everyone here says they don't but somebody does!

A lot on here do it because it's an untraceable crime, and then lie about it. Take this thread for example.

I've said it several times on here, but I just wish they'd get rid of the feature. Even if it means getting rid of thumbs up too, not that it I think it should. The fact that I got 12 thumbs up for ^that^ is beyond me, really. I appreciate it, but still. Why people's comments get thumbed down the way they do is beyond me as well. That one is something I don't appreciate. If a comment really is "inappropriate or in poor taste", then it's probably worth reporting it. At least then the moderators can see who is causing regular problems and block their account if necessary.

But, yeah, I agree. I'm not lying, by the way. Although, I guess that's what a liar would say:P. I do do things on the site which would portray me in a bad light and which I'd admit to, though.

        • "but I just wish they'd get rid of the feature"

          100% agree as I've noticed quite a few people say some creative and intelligent things, only to be thumbed down by what could be described as;

"an aggregation of mentally challenged sheeple"

While those who say what's "expected" get praised, it's a pathetic system indeed. Though I think more of the "thumbs up/down" feature as a crutch for the retarded to stand on as I, or others, say things that twist their little brains. Lord knows, they could never cut it without the ability to thumb the great cat down.

its so common that i thumb up your comments but its no way that i thumb up your every comment... mostly after reading the comment i realize i should check who is it written by and the name is yours and you've written so well in many comments that i have to thumb up ... its not your name its actually the comments i like... if it would be any other i would do the same...

I don't thumbs down unless I think the comment is just in really poor taste. It happens that some users are better at being generally distasteful than others but that doesn't cause me to target them.

I thumbs up when a comment is funny or very helpful. Although I will warn you all. When people react the being thumbsed down by taking it really personally, I will use :D

I often thumb up comments that I think have been thumbed down wrongly to 0 or -1 etc., but I don't think that is dependent on the user. That probably counts for two-thirds of my thumbing exploits, and I doubt even 5% of my thumbs are down. So no, I don't think I do unless there's some psychological thing going on beneath the surface (which is perfectly possible).

I thumb-down comments based on quality, however, I've noticed that some people are more likely to make dumbass comments than others, so I find myself thumb-downing the same people over and over again.

"Do you see a user you dislike and thumb their comments down whenever you see them regardless of what they write?"

-Not regardless of what they write. If I dislike them it's usually because they write bad or trolling comments. If they write a good comment, I will probably thumb it up.

"Do you also thumb all the other comments up in order to push that user's comments as far down the list a possible?"

-No, I usually only thumbs up the comments that I like/think are good comments. That sounds rather hateful, and honestly, they are not worth that much effort.

"Or do you thumb all comments up because you want to spread good cheer?"

-I may have done this a few times depending on the type of story or poll. I mostly try to only thumbs up the good comments though.

"Do you thumb up only users you like personally?"

I thumbs up the users I like. However, it is almost always after reading some or all of their comment and deciding if I think it should be thumbed up or not.

I think twice before thumbing up someone I like or dislike, to make sure I'm thumbing up the comment, not the person. If I have doubts, then I don't thumb it up. There was one user I dislike I found myself thumbing down quite frequently, so I really had to rethink how I was doing that. But after careful consideration, it really was that their comments were that bad and bordering on fucked. But I've also thumbed that user up.

Also, when I say 'bad' or 'unhelpful', I don't just mean 'a different view to mine'. I've thumbed up views that are different to mine, because I've thought they were well worded or convincing.

I rarely thumb down, unless I think it's really wrong/inappropriate/unhelful/rude. If it is really bad or offensive, I'll report it. I haven't reported too many (though I think I've reported one or two accidentally. Damn phone. Sorry, Mods :( )

If I'm neutral to a comment but its zero or negative, I'll thumb it up.

People have done that to me. Who remembers the post that basically said people with physical deformities or mental disabilities aren't normal people with feelings? I said how mean it was and got thumbed down for it. Then when I asked why my comment got disliked I got thumbed down again. That made me so fucking mad!! Not a lot of people here hate me but I think the ones that do are pissed because I've insulted a particular celebrity who quite frankly deserves it.

Anyway, I rarely rate comments, and when I see a user I dislike I just look away.

I remember that post. My comment was buried in negative thumbs and I was so angry. Not for myself, just angry that so many people honestly think less of those who haven't been as fortunate as them.

I just thought of someone else who gets away with thumbs up for just being who they are, even toough they can be very distasteful xD Disturbingly so. Milkymum... good old milkymum. So yeah, it happens lol Though I don't think people do the extreme your talking about. Or alteast I hope they don't. I've seen threads where someone posted something like "I hate dogs." And if anyone said something like "Why hate dogs?" they'd get a thumb down cause the poster was super bias lol

If I find myself bursting out laughing at a comment, I have to thumb up :) Or if I strongly agree. Often times I'll got to comment in a thread, but someone said exactly what I wanted to say already, so I just give'm a thumbs up. The only way I am bias when I know a user if it's say, for example... ItDuz. He will write something negative about women at any turn. I don't agree with his views, when I first read his comments, I would thumb him down. However, after seeing multiple posts of his, I shrug it off lol He gets away with many things I would deem thumb downable. Other than things like that, nope, no bias. I thumb what I see fit

No. That's childish. This site is supposed to be for people to express their views even if they differ to that of our own, and as long as they are not abusive then there's no problem. xx

actually there are some specific people of whom comments i am very impressed by and almost every time they comment so good that i have to thumb them up... but not always... i first read the comment and if it deserves to be thumbed up then i do....
mostly i don't see the user name and just read the thread of comments. and when i like the comment its only then i look up at the user name and how many people like it... so generally i first judge the comment and then thumb up...

Almost never. The only partial exception is once or twice I've encountered a particularly stupid and probably trollish rant spanning multiple comments on the same story. I thumbed them all down, even if one on its own might not have been objectionable.

Made-up example: If someone spends 7 comments expounding on why people who like red are evil psychopaths and then also posts "I hate red." I'd probably go ahead and thumb that down too.

Wow. Sounds like a guy near where I grew up. If he saw anyone wearing red, he'd follow them along screaming that the were whores or the spawn of Satan. I never encountered him personally, but my mother and brother both copped an earful.

I only thumb down comments that are mean spirited or hateful, I tend to thumb up what seems like the best advice in any given thread, and I always thumb up if I see someone who's been downvoted unfairly.

I only thumbs down when the comment is inapropriate or hating on someone. i don't thumbs down when its distastfull, or if I don't like it. I don't just throw my thumbs up to every comment I see you know, I use my thumbing up powers wisely.
