Do you think this comment is out of order? i do!

Recently, I was with a group of people and somehow conversation got on to kids TV (mostly UK channel CeBeebies) and subsequently kids TV presenters. Then someone said that they found one of the presenters who has half of one of her arms 'creepy'. I think this presenter is an amputee but not sure why. Anyway, she is missing her forearm on one side. So this person said, "Don't you find her a bit creepy?" This comment made me quite cross but it wasn't really appropriate to start really challenging it so I just quite plainly said, "No, not at all." As did a few other people. Personally, I think it's a good thing that little kids see people like this presenter, because it gets them used to the idea that some people do have disabilites etc. We had the Paralympics here in the UK back in the Summer and I think it really helped to open people's minds... so to hear someone say something like this was quite upsetting. Any one of us could be involved in an accident and lose half an arm. I thought it was such a thoughtless comment AND it was said in front of their toddler! I'd really like to know what others think so please vote and please comment. Thanks.

Very offensive comment and I would have challenged the person on it 29
Thoughtless and out of order comment but I wouldn't have said anything 16
Ohh dear, they shouldn't have said that 11
Meh... not that offensive, it's just their opinion 11
Get over it, it was just an opinion 14

I do think it's out of line and I would definitely call someone out if they said somtething like that around me.

People with disabilities are either born that way or suffer some horrible accident which causes it. To blame someone on something that was due to circumstance is not only ignorant, it's dehumanizing.

We're all just people, regardless of any other factors. Seems to be one of the biggest things we forget though...

I kind of wish I had challenged her. But it wasn't really appropriate. Sigh.

Don't feel bad about it, at least you're tactful. I'd probably be better off if I learned to keep my mouth shut more, been kicked out of a few places for speaking my mind when it wasn't appropriate.

You're not obligated to confront anyone. However, if she thinks it's appropriate to say something that awful, replying "fuck you" isn't going to lower the quality of the conversation.

Yeah, it just wasn't the situation for what could have turned into a slightly 'heated' discussion, I guess.

I agree with you completely. Things like that shouldn't be viewed as "creepy". It's life, stuff like that happens all the time, and we shouldn't act like it doesn't. That would be foolish, and in my opinion, offensive. There's nothing remotely creepy or abnormal about it.

So far 31 people have expressed some agreement with me and 12 haven't, so that suggests I'm not over-reacting.

What the hell? That's so out of order. So sad that such prejudice and ignorance is still so rife in modern society. They're lucky it wasnt me they said it to! I wouldn't have been able to help myself from challenging them on it. Would have been a bit awkward if there was a small child around, though. Grr... what a stupid thing to say.

I agree too but I have to admit that once a mother asked me to hold her one year old child and I said ok. I knew that the baby had a sort of problem with his spine and legs and arms. All his bones were sort of not in place and he couldn't sit, talk or anything. When I hold the baby in my arm I was like, "Oh my God he's so 'soft'." It was a weird sensation and I have to admit that I didn't like it and I hated myself for feeling this way.

Jesus what has the world come to these days where you can't say something about any minority group with somebody having an absolute bitch fit?!

She said someone with half an arm was creepy. So what? It is freaky. It's just her opinion. It's not like she said "Omg why are there disabled people on the TV, that's disgusting to look at". Chill the fuck out people.

So, if you had half an arm and someone said you were 'creepy' because of it and hinted that your job wasn't suited to you because of it... then you wouldn't find that offensive? Right, sure.

Yes, a human being, a person with feelings etc. Can't you see that? And don't you see how that kind of comment contributes towards really unhealthy attitudes towards people with disabilities?

You're fucking pathetic. Oh no, a human being that will never ever know what I said, better not say anything rude about them. So now nobody can say anything ever about anybody else in case their poor little feelings got hurt? You pathetic hippy, all she said was it was creepy. Stop being so fucking sensitive you big girls blouse.

The tone you've taken would suggest you're the one who's 'fucking pathetic'. I hope you find a healthy outlet for your aggression, rather than calling people names online. If you can't say anything intelligent, don't bother.

They'll never ever know what you say about them. It's like if somebody said "I hate Romney, he's a rich fuck", you'd say 'Don't be so rude, Romney is a real person with feelings'.

Well, I don't happen to agree with Romney's political views. But his political views aren't a disability. At the end of the day, although I'm not a fan of the man, yes, he is a person with feelings and I wouldn't be rude for the sake of it. Anyway, your comparison is a bit obscure.

I wouldn't necessarily call it totally offensive till I actually asked the person a few more questions and challenged her perceived shallow, cold-hearted views.
Then it would probably be all on like donkey Kong! If the wrong reasons were given.

Because of the half arm - I heard it in context. I'm not one to jump to conclusions. Unfortunately, I know what I heard.

Did the person specifically say that the presenter was creepy because she is an amputee?

Since you didn't say, it is possible that the person found her creepy for other reasons.

This person definately meant because she has 'half an arm' (those were her words too.) I was there and heard it in context and me and everyone else knew exactly what she meant. I wasn't pleased that it was said in front of a toddler either.
