Do you think "the purge" is actually a good idea

For those of you who don't know, The Purge is a 2013 movie that depicts the United States in the year 2022. The annual purge is a 12 hour event in which all criminal activity (including murder) is legal. The only rules are you can't harm a government official of rank 10 or higher, and you can use weaponry above Class 4. The consequence of breaking the rules of the purge is the death penalty.

The purge is supposed to act as a catharsis, a means to get all of your pent up aggression and negativity out.

Do you think it's a good idea?

Hell no! 70
I don't think it would work 15
It'd be too unfair for those who can't afford to protect themselves 20
If people agreed to only commit crime on that day, then yes 26
Yes, it's quite clever! 39

I really don't think it's a good idea, nor can I see how that miraculously helps the economy like how the movie says it does.

I thought the movie was stating it helped stop crime not that is helped the economy.

I'm just basing my knowledge off the trailers, where I thought it mentioned something about the economy being better. I never actually saw the movie.

Same here. I just could easily see you being as grimly funny as he is, while killing a preacher who's also a child molester. Like you'd probably give him a good lecture on morality, and he'd reply with something stupid, and you'd just give him a really witty reply that makes him feel kind of bad for the things he's done. Finally you impale him with a sharpened cross. Oh the irony! Then turn around and look at all the other scums that you've already captured and smile crookedly as you see the horror in their eyes, as they each think to themselves "that's going to be me."

Yeah I could easily see you as Dexter.

Tempting, but how would you feel knowing that other people are out raping kids at the same time, and nothing can legally be done about it for the rest of the year?

My first thoughts were something along the lines of ''perhaps it'd be a good idea...'' and then I realized it only really sounds good on paper, or when you think about it briefly in your head.

If that were to happen, just think of all the chaos that would occur in the streets and in the cities across the nation. I think all the violence that would occur would be too much on the innocent people who have nothing to do with it. I believe a lot of innocents would get caught in the mix and it wouldn't be fair to them.

Then you'd have to look at the economic factors and things like damage to infrastructure. I think you get the point lol. Not a very good idea in my opinion.

Dreadful idea. I for one have no desire to be an anti-social dick, and I don't think many other people do either.

Only if you are a blood thirsty psychopath. If you really think we should keep the evil people from going nuts we should just let them kill the idiots.

Many people volunteer to be victims anyways. Anyone who didn't listen when you say not to walk in the white van, anyone who thought it was a good idea to piss on an electrical line, anyone who thought they could change a man who killed his last five wives by being his NEXT wife.

I really don't think letting innocent people who follow the laws and are not a hazard to themselves or society deserve to get murdered, stolen from and raped.

Also their is a huge issue with this. Lets say someone stole your tv during the purge. After the purge you steal it back but it was yours. Who is in trouble? After the purge you still stole something which is against the law. Meaning you can now get arrested. Which doesn't make much sense really. What if they stole something else like your kids are they required to return them after the purge?

Now that I think about it. This concept is making less and less sense. There is too many holes in it.

  • Its a horrible idea, as I think the movie clearly established. If it were real though, I'd have a lovely drug fueled night in my apt (going outside doesn't seem ideal). I'd also make sure my gun wielding bf never leaves my side as weapons/violence aren't my thing.

Ugh I just realized this is like a normal Saturday night for me :( minus the gun

Psychology has proven that a system like that doesn't work. I remember learning that in basic Psychology back in college. It actually encourages the behavior that your 'purging' on that one night a year. You get used to doing it and then you forget how to deal with your frustrations or hatred in a non-violent and safe manner. Basically it puts you at a greater risk for sudden outbursts of violence.

I think the rules kind of ruin it.
