Do you think the drinking law should be to age 18 in all places?

In some places you can drink at 18 and other the age is 21. When I say everywhere I mean every country in which the law is not yet 18.

Yes 80
no 32

It's 18 here and that feels right to me but guns aren't legal here and many people aren't driving by 18. It gives people a chance to get used to alcohol and its effects and to learn to treat it with respect.

I'd argue it should be this way round rather than let everyone drive and *then* discover what it's like to drive with alcohol in their system.

Although, to argue the other case, our casualty departments are overflowing with drink-related accidents and such a large majority of them are younger members of the community who could legally drink.

What would be an interesting question (and I don't know the answer) is whether people's drinking habits vary in countries with different laws regarding alcohol. We very rarely heard of fake IDs here until laws forced publicans to crack down). For instance, I drank in pubs aged 15, bought my own alcoholic drinks and never had a fake ID. If I'd needed perhaps, I'd have got one.

    • Well in some places people have to drive. Since everything is so far and spread out that this is the only way to get places. Places like japan put everything close to each other. So they can pretty much walk everywhere. Which I think would be a useful set up to have everywhere.

Just because most people drive in one country doesn't mean you should let kids start driving around at 16! People drive everywhere in most Western countries, and who does the driving until they pass their test? Parents. Taxis. Friends. It's better than letter kids drive cars. You think you can walk everywhere in Japan? I think you need to go to Japan. Not in a city.

        • That is a issue in some places. So you are going to make it impossible for some people to go to work and school. Also why do you assume everyone has friend who can drive?

That wouldn't make it impossible for some people to go to school and work, don't be absurd.

How do you think people get to school and work for the previous 16 years of their lives? Parents! Public transport etc... I don't assume everyone one has a friend to drive you clown, it's a suggestion.

You honestly think that by starting driving a year later at 17, there are going to be millions of people who find it suddenly impossible to get to school at the age of 16, when they were doing just fine at 15,14,13,12,11 etc? Buffoon.

            • They get parents to go when they are going to school. Generally or some school transportation. Also do you know where every bus in every city is? You think walking 5-7 miles is a good way to get to the nearest bus-top? Maybe if they happen to live close to the school. That or they live in a city where everything is centrally located. Which is a very helpful set up. What if your job is in a different town? Not all people work in the same city.

The definition of a joke is the ''No drinking under 21'' law (USA).

Don't know why we have that in place considering most teens drink before they even reach 21, and continue to do so.

Ugh, this hangover makes me wish that alcohol was not legal to anyone of any age.

It's 19 here and 18 just across the provincial border which I can literally see from my window. I lived in the US for a couple years though and it felt sooo weird that their age for drinking is 21, it's such a random number, and so old. I felt like it was so odd that 21 year olds were legally drinking at clubs for the first time because around here you would have already got all that out of your system years ago. It also seems so wrong and backwards that you can go fight in a war but you can't buy some wine at the shop to drink, like any normal family would anywhere else.

No, because that would require some kind of world government which would inevitable turn evil and enslave us all.

I was joking. Mostly. So to answer in the spirit I assume you meant it. Yes it would be a good idea for places with a drinking age over 18 to lower it to that age.

I don't think the places with no age or a lower one should necessarily raise it.

        • I think that they should have an age limit. I do not think its right watching 5 year old smoke.

Then don't watch. I'm not sure I what that has to do with alcohol though.

It used to be 21 here now it is 18. At 21 it didn't stop a lot of minors drinking. There were probably more charges.

I always felt that it was silly that I could go fight and DIE for my country, but to have a little drink was illegal. Fucking stupid politics...

And weed! How the fuck is this shit still illegal when alcohol is not?!?

I don't really think it matters. People will drink when they feel like it.

I once lived in a state where the drinking age was briefly lowered to 18. When this happened, high schools became flooded with alcohol.

I would say 19 for on-sale, 21 for off-sale. If a 19 or 20 year old gets a DWI, license is revoked for 2 years minimum. College students need to learn the importance of a designated driver.

  • Does'nt matter what age you lower it to,people who want to drink are going to find a way around the age restriction.I started drinking at age 13 when I made my own fuckin money.FUCK the restrictions Make it legal at AGE 5.

    • Age 5? Do you also think babies in diapers should smoke? 18 by law is an adult in most places. However if you can die at war why can you not drink? Yeah that makes sense. I do not think we are sending most 5 year old to war. Yes kill the youth before they develop. Brilliant idea you have. If you want to kill your race sure. In most cases people do not want to send a 5 year old and younger to war.

But sacrificing 16 year olds in combat helps society to win wars. The social cost of youth drinking is a detriment to society.

Society doesn't care about fairness, it cares about itself.
