Do you think that the us is spening too much on prison/jail?

The U.S. spends more than any other nation -- $60 billion a year -- to house inmates in prison......
I mean, some of these inmates are getting 40 years for robbery (no body died fyi)- I'm not saying that it's right, but I think thats alot of tax payers money.

    Completely agree, it's insane.

Most prisoners with the death sentence are never killed. They just sit on death row till they die. But death row is WAY more expensive than a standard prison. So it's basically a really expensive life sentence. I don't think anyone looks at where the money goes when it comes to prison.

    • Yes. Sometimes I wonder if it's because they are so nervous about everything - like everyone is out to get everyone - well, it seems like that sometimes anyway.

Ron Paul 2012. He will pardon all non-violent drug offenders if he takes office.

The problem isn't really imprisoning things like robbery where there is a victim. The problem is the existance of victimless crimes.

Legalize drugs and prostitution and the prisons will empty. It will cut way down on drug related crime, and prostitutes will have a safer working environment.

    • Yes, I agree completely. So there must be something stoping them from doing legallizing these things.... so what is it.... fear?

  • Privatization means money is actually *made* out of peoples' incarceration. Of course, that money doesn't go to benefit the taxpayer, it goes to corporations.

    • Are all prisons in the US privatized tho? How would this 'business' make any money? Free labour, perhaps, but what about the cost of the integration initiatives to prepare inmates for life outside of jail.

Yes and if Im not mistaken the majority of inmates in the U.S. are incarcerated for drug charges (marijuana being the majority).
Its fucking ridiculous and HUGE waste of tax payers money.

I don't know about the US but in the UK I get really annoyed that prisoners can get compensation if another prisoner attacks them, and one even won the lottery when he was out for the weekend.

Why then, are they not asked to pay for their 'keep' in jail or to compensate their victims???

Or would that be against their bloody human rights???

    • Wow! that is a good point! I had no idea that compensation was issued in the UK - crazy!!! I dont think prison should be a better life than living in poverty.......where is the incentive to stay out..... a bit strange

I read Jeffrey Archer's prison diaries and I'm sure it was there that I read about the prisoners who deliberately commit crimes and hang around to be caught - just so they can go back into jail. They tend to be men with no families or homes to go to, so at least they're warm, dry, well-fed with TV and education at hand.

Actually saw a TV programme today where an old jail has been opened as a hostel for people to stay in. We have one that's not in use, why don't they open that for the homeless!

        • I think that opening up old jails for homeless people is a fantastic idea! Why wouldnt they?
I might have to read that :)

          Thanks,

    • It seems that way to me too. I mean, poverty breeds desparation - I think they should be a little bit more proactive if you know what I mean. Perhaps an initiaive to fix the desparity in the streets?
