Why do you keep asking this question?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • Simply because it is important to me. You guys misunderstood a large part of what I was trying to convey in my story. Some of you seemed to get offended. The fact that it didn't go through leads me to believe that my observations are for the most part correct. If it was untrue, would there be any need to deny my post? Would there be any need to censor this simple question? The community as a whole should be able to see and share their thoughts about this without the fear of being "silenced".

Maybe because the question has been asked and answered before. Perhaps numerous times.

        Or

It's a conspiracy. Resistance is futile. Black helicopters should be arriving at your house shortly.

Politically correct? No. I encounter racist comments and stories that are upvoted all the time.

Op, Could you make up an example to show what you mean, and why it's a problem?

    • I already stated why it is a problem. Many years back, this site was a safe haven for its users. The community was more respectful of each other and people's differences in opinions were handle with maturity, for the most part. A user who has sadly since left, once stated that the site was growing to be more judgmental and that many users were censoring themselves out of fear of being judged. This completely defeats what the site originally intended to be. If you have an opinion that is not PC, you run the risk of being harshly judged. People seem to take offense so easily that if you don't agree with them, they'll often freak out. For instance, let's say that a post has something to do with feminism. If you dare to say something that doesn't necessarily jive with the movement, people will get defensive and start accusing you of things. Did you see the post about sagging pants? Did you see how immaturely some users acted when they discovered that most users had views greatly differing from their own? Again, I don't think it is right that users are having to tip toe around out of fear of being made out to be a bad guy. (etc)

I hope that this is making some form of sense since, I am sleep deprived and I really need to get some sleep.

Isn't that the definition of political correctness?

This is what you sound like- Boohoohoo, I can't act like an asshole without someone telling me I'm an asshole.

        • That is not exactly what I meant. The old site I knew and grew to love so much had an entirely different feel as opposed to what this site seems to be morphing into now. Since it seems that I am having a difficulty with properly getting my views across, the best way to see what I am referring to would be to go quite some ways back into the archives. If you pay enough attention, it shouldn't take you too long to see the difference.

You expect us all to go some way back into the archives to find things that illustrate a point you are unable to put into words.

            • I'm sure it seems confusing. But it all made sense to me when I was writing it. I'll admit that sometimes I think that I have conveyed beliefs very well when the reality of it is that some other people can't understand what I was trying to convey. This is why I gave you that suggestion. Perhaps, my intentions would be easier for you to pick up on.

It's a forum of strangers engaging in public debate.

The foundation of this site invites judgement, so you can't expect people to always respond positively to those with wildly differing views.

If you yelled something offensive out in the middle of a street, would you be surprised when somebody yells something offensive back?

Of course there is a respectful way to express disagreement, but I'd say the community here are pretty tame. I'm not sure how far back you go, but looking at how it is now compared to a couple of years ago, I'd say it has improved. Fewer troll posts, fewer personal vendettas, fewer idiotic questions.

I think the responses probably more accurately reflect society's views now than they did before. I remember seeing posts from a long time ago, and regardless of how bizarre or disturbing they were, people seemed to always vote 'normal', just because they wanted to hold the hand and sooth the mind of fellow 'outsider'. This is nice and all, but doesn't give you a true idea of what is or isn't considered normal.

        • You make some excellent points.

I have "old" ties to site. While my account has racked up a few years, my knowledge of the site goes back even longer. I guess I am just a little nostalgic for how things used to be and the type of users that were attracted to this place. The site has changed quite a bit. Some of the change has been good, but not all of it…

Arent most things politically correct now a days? Nothing wrong with being politically correct but there is a point where is not anymore and it just becomes harassment.

            Fair enough.

I think a community like this is pretty fluid and changeable, with new regulars arriving and old regulars disappearing, which means the tone and style of the responses can go through shifts over time.

So I understand how you might have enjoyed a previous instance of this community more than what is here now. Hang around long enough and it may well revert to something more your thing :)

Can you give specific examples from the sagging story? I've reread those comments many times, and I don't remember anyone on any side of the debate acting immaturely there. I'd be interested in finding out what you classify as "immaturity".

In fact, examples from any story would be nice. You've brought up this perceived "PC" problem many times, and I think it's about time you start giving examples to support you claims.

        • Of course, YOU wouldn't consider it to be immaturity if YOU are on the side that was writing those comments in question.

Maybe, you should follow your own advice and learn back your fucking claims up. This is only the second time I have brought up my concerns. Since when does twice equal many fucking times?
