Human beings almost all have empathy to some degree,as a matter of fact, all mammals do as well- look it up for yourself if you don't believe me. The only people who don't have empathy either have a personality disorder (basically clinical sociopathy, psychopathy, narcissism, ect) as well as some parts of the autism spectrum. The OP is not talking about a super power.

So, most people have some degree of empathy, a small percentage don't have any, and another small percentage have a lot. This last category is what you could call 'empaths'. Pretty much just people who have a stronger ability to be empathetic than normal people.

  • I wouldn't want to see one who wasn't empathetic.

I think its a good thing. They understand better what your going through. I'm very empathetic myself. For example, I can't watch certain things I used to watch because I automatically, involuntarily put myself in that persons shoes. Even animals shoes, so to speak. I still love horror movies, but things like Saw and Hostel bother me. I watch it, but I'm internally disturbed because, to an extent, things like that really happen and I can't help but be bothered by it.

My understanding is that if you have no empathy, you'd make a terrible therapist. How can you help someone with a problem if you can't even understand them? The skill in therapy is getting people to tell you what their problems are, so that you can empathise with them. Only then can you help them.
