Do you think social services should get involved when children are....

EXTREEMLY obese?
There is much controversy about this right now in Canada. A thorough health investigation is obviously conducted prior to filing abuse charges - but if it's simply parents feeding their children waaaay to much to the point where their child’s health is at risk……........ do you think social services get involved?
BTW: the children may not be taken away, but councelling may be enforced etc.....

Absolutely not 13
Absolutely yes 31
Maybe, depends on the other living conditions 50

  • If they are getting fed too much at a young age then that child is going to grow up to be obese and instead of just eating alot they will be addicted to eating, they will end up not being able to live life the way average sized people do. What is fair about teaching a child that eating too much is good and then later in life they start getting harrassed and not being able to do the activities others are doing because of their weight?
I think that social sevices should have the right to give them a warning (or two warnings) if they find out a parent or parents are feeding their child too much and that the parents have to make sure the child looses weight and if the child hasn't lost a certain amount of weight then the child should be taken away from them.

It's harsh for the parents if the child is taken away but it's even more harsh for the child that would have to grow up isolated from other people due to them being obese.

Yes definitely, the parent is neglecting the child's need of nourishment, which I think is worse than even bad living conditions!

Unless the child has a medical condition which excuses his weight then the parent needs seeing to. Also, it's not just obese children who are malnourished, so it's a tricky one.

    • It is a tricky one for sure! However, I think that there should be resources available for families in this situation, if they deny the resources..... then.....I think it may require some more drastic measures for the childs sake

Depends why they are fat. There has been cases where children are obese since they have a medical issue where they cant stop growing.

In those cases the parents and the doctors cant really help it. Also some children are chubby when they are children and get taller and thinner.

My cousins would gain a few extra pounds than grow, than gain a few extra and than grow and now they are both over 6 feet. So I think it really depends on why the child is heavy. A lot of kids keep on baby fat for a while and grow out of it.

Adults are different because they already stopped growing so if they gain weight but they become fat. I seen some people keep on fat when growing but than become very tall. So different children grow differently.

I have a two year old at home that just cant stop eatting up all our food. I try and tell her its not ok in words that she can understand and she just wont listen to me. She sneeks to the kitchen at night when every one is asleep or when no one is paying attention. I feed her well and just enough but its not good enough for her so she wants more more and more! I always have to watch her and fallow her around to make sure she dont go get food in the kitchen. I even started to hide all snacks from her if not she will eat all of it. I love her so much and I dont think im a bad mom and I am trying real hard to control her from eatting to much. I just want her to be ok

I have a good idea to help you with that proble.m with your daughter, if you start to substitute honey instead of sugar as a sweetener, honey has a natural chemical that tells the brain "ive had enough", so she won't WANT any more. for best results, get the honey, not just anywhere, but in a larger quamtity from either farmers market or beekeeper, (or buy organic but that is expemsive). this also includes processed foods. particularly ones with high fructose corn syrup. hfcs makes u think ur not full (opposite of honey) and has many other detrimental consequences not to mention.. this might mean u make a change for the whole family interms of the groceries you buy. it will be a change well worth it though. good luck.

no, i think cps should mind their own business and let people raise their kid their own way unless they are being physically, sexually, or emotionally abused and starved.

This is physical abuse. They are not necessarily over feeding their kids, they're usually just feeding them crap. They live on fast-food, chocolate, crisps, etc anything to shut the kids up and so they don't have to get up their fat @sses to feed their kids properly. It may be down to educating the parents or sending the whole lot of them to boot camp, the parents are likely to be obese too.

Kids don't know any better and will eat whatever is tasty that the parents give them. It's the parents fault, the kids are too young to decide against diabetes, heart failure, etc.

It could be argued that stuffing sausage links down your child's throat could be considered sexual abuse.

  • They should be sent to labor camps. The kids, that is.

I understand it's a problem but I've met some chubby kids and their parents before and social services for them seems like it can be really harsh.

I know you're saying they don't need to get taken away but it looks like some people are.

what? of course forcing something down a childs throat is abuse. But parents shouldn't be bothered about what they chose to serve their children
