Do you think it's worse to be an alcoholic or drug addict?

I don't do either I'm just asking.

Alcoholic 10
Drug Addict 16
Both of these are equally bad 24
It depends on the alcohol/types of drugs 35

Alcohol is a drug and there are so many drugs that it just doesn't make sense to only compare alcohol against all other drugs. Addiction severity is based on the individual person and the individual drug.

You can find an environment where drugs are not common or readily available, but alcohol is EVERYWHERE, unless you want to live under strict Muslim law.
It makes staying away from alcohol much more difficult.

True, and the same goes for tobacco products.

True, true, true, says he who is attempting, once again, top become tobacco free, tomorrow!
And they're on us$2.00 around here!

Depends on the person. But in general I would say equally bad for the people around them. Most hard drugs will kill you quicker than alcohol though.

The differences are arbitrary. Alcohol is a drug, and not an entirely soft one. There are some things that make alcoholism worse, though.

Alcohol is one of the few drugs where the withdrawal can actually kill you. It is also very difficult to recover from due to its unusually wide availability and relative social acceptance.

There are some factors that can make drug addiction worse, but they are mostly environmental as well. Drugs like heroin, crack, PCP, and other "hard" drugs are associated with subcultures that alienate the addict more than the ubiquitous social drinking culture of the "high functioning alcoholic." There's a stigma to drug addiction that many alcoholics can avoid. Black markets make everything more dangerous. Prescription drug addiction is probably between the two.

So yeah, there are differences, but they are both the same type of thing.

I think we should either make alcohol illegal or legalise all drugs whys alcohol legal and not others

Both are bad, but at least alcohol is legal so you don't have to depend on shady people to get your hands on illegal substances.

Drugs are more likely to either kill you or land you in prison. But any addiction can ruin someone.

  • Neither one is fun. I don't know any alcoholics but I was a drug addict. The thing with drugs is you don't even take them to get high you start taking them just to be normal. I don't know if alcoholics get physically ill from not drinking like drug addicts do if they stop getting high.

Actually heavy alcoholics will die if they stop drinking without medical intervention. The withdrawal from alcohol can and does kill those with a physical addiction to it.

      • I hadn't heard of anyone dying, not that I'm disputing what you say, but I do and did know individuals who needed outrageous amounts just to be "normal". Amounts that would severely incapacitate or hospitalize normal drinkers.
