Do you think forum/fansite moderators should be able to punish people for obscenities that aren't against the site rules?
i'm an avid Minecraft builder, i have an account on PMC (Planet Minecraft), and what happened there is what inspired me to ask this.
A few months ago, i made a Wolfenstein-related map. Anyone who is familiar with the Wolfenstein series knows it takes place in an alternate WWII setting, so my map featured Nazi Germany as the location. I rose from level 1 to level 14 in about two weeks from the submission alone. But eventually a moderator took it down (removing 13 of my levels) and suspended me for 3 days or so because of the Nazi symbols.
I had actually checked before even submitting it to make sure the symbols were ok, and the PMC rules states nothing against them unless you are using them to PROMOTE a neo-nazi cause. I told this to the moderator and she simply said "Nazi symbolism is not appropriate for this site".
I wasn't being pro-nazi, and i even made that clear in the description, but she still took it down, and the removal of all my levels and the suspension just seem to say "I'm a higher rank, i always have the right of way", if you ask me.
... but still, considering it wasn't in the rules, how was i supposed to know?
Do you think it is justified for moderators to remove things even if they aren't breaking rules? Tell me if you have ever had a similar experience, i would be interested to know how often this occurs.
