Do you think forum/fansite moderators should be able to punish people for obscenities that aren't against the site rules?

i'm an avid Minecraft builder, i have an account on PMC (Planet Minecraft), and what happened there is what inspired me to ask this.

A few months ago, i made a Wolfenstein-related map. Anyone who is familiar with the Wolfenstein series knows it takes place in an alternate WWII setting, so my map featured Nazi Germany as the location. I rose from level 1 to level 14 in about two weeks from the submission alone. But eventually a moderator took it down (removing 13 of my levels) and suspended me for 3 days or so because of the Nazi symbols.
I had actually checked before even submitting it to make sure the symbols were ok, and the PMC rules states nothing against them unless you are using them to PROMOTE a neo-nazi cause. I told this to the moderator and she simply said "Nazi symbolism is not appropriate for this site".

I wasn't being pro-nazi, and i even made that clear in the description, but she still took it down, and the removal of all my levels and the suspension just seem to say "I'm a higher rank, i always have the right of way", if you ask me.
... but still, considering it wasn't in the rules, how was i supposed to know?

Do you think it is justified for moderators to remove things even if they aren't breaking rules? Tell me if you have ever had a similar experience, i would be interested to know how often this occurs.

Yes, moderators are there to remove all potentially offensive material 4
No, moderators are there to enforce the rules and nothing else 5

They are SUPPOSED to be there do remove offensive material, but what yo posted doesn't really seem to be offending anyone but the moderator. Fuck that moderator.

    • I simply wanted to at least be informed beforehand that what i posted would be a problem, but i guess that was too much to ask. The ironic thing is that the original New York Minecraft map (an amazing map, btw, made by one of the top builders on the site) has had no problems with moderators despite having a giant crossed-out Nazi swastika in a semi-hidden area.
Same thing as in my post, using Nazi symbolism in a non pro-Nazi way, but it was overlooked by moderators.

Really goes to show how selective moderators can be. :P
