Do you think "dog the bounty hunter" is a hero?

Why is Dog paraded as a hero by so many people when all he does is capture people that HE let out of jail? He's just (rightfully) cleaning up a mess that HE made, that's what he should do and I don't think he gets a pat on the back for that!! These "bad guys" wouldn't be on the street to begin with if HE hadn't got them out of jail!! So hero....or no??

  • Uh. Think you've missed the entire point or construct of the show, here.

He doesn't put anyone in, nor let anyone out of jail. That's up to the police. He simply chases down the "bad guys" for local law enforcement: those who have skipped bail, missed court appearances and the like.

In which show does he let someone out of jail (given he'd have no such authority to ever do such a thing)?

As for hero or not, we might never know, for sure. But for now, until proven otherwise, he's a good man. Dog, himself, has seen jail, has been on the other side of the law, of addiction, but he's made (and making?) amends.

In the words of Gene Simmons (KISS bassist), to a fan who was bashing another band: "And what have *you* done lately?"

It's easy to be an arm-chair critic, chastise those we don't know and circumstances we don't have all information for, but he seems to be doing a good thing, so why knock it?

If evidence should arise he's not, then we can all adjust our assessment accordingly.

I'll assume you're decent, of a kind heart and nature as well, until *you* prove otherwise. See how it works? ^.^

Let me break it down for ya:

You're arrested. You appear before a judge and are arraigned. The judge may or may not set bail (or OR you). Most of the time they do, unless you are a flight risk or accused of a horriffic, horrendous crime. The purpose of BAIL is so that you are not sitting in jail on the county's dime awaiting trial, the bail MONEY is to (hopefully) ensure you show up at your future court date to face your charges. So, your bail is set at say $5000. You don't have $5000 so you call a bail bondsman to guarantee you. He doesn't actually PAY the money, unless you DON'T show up to court.....if you DON'T show up, HE has to pay....hence his need to come FIND YOU!! Which is what Dog is doing on his show....he is simply FINDING the people HE got out of jail so that HE doesn't have to pay the bond. So my question is....why is he a hero for that?? He's not clearing the streets of "bad guys"....he is just re-capturing the bad guys he helped get out of jail!! Get it?

      • Heh. But that doesn't speak towards whether he's good, or bad. It still comes down to what others are doing, or not doing, with their lives.

The thrust of my point wasn't the show itself, but more the idea of arm-chair critics. It's too easy. Indeed, what have even *I* done lately? Not much, compared to the man in question here.

From what I've seen, he seems of genuine good character, a decent father, a decent husband, faithful, even sensitive, charismatic. Which is more than many can say. Does that qualify as a hero? If it's all legit, then yes, by my standards.

Just goes to show they can make reality TV about absolutely anything these days. God forbid anyone ever has an original and creative idea for television when instead we can just let a camera crew wander around watching someone literally just do their job.

Give it ten years and there'll be a reality TV crew following another reality TV crew so they can make a reality TV programme about reality TV.

Not a hero, he gives little kids the notion that if you do drugs it will be okay because DOG is okay amd famous. You know? I just see it as advertising for the drug cartels.

The show is cheesy and American, so they insert morals and Christian rants into almost every episode, but other than that it's pretty entertaining.

As to whether Dog is a hero, he provides a service. If he's a hero, then so is the plumber that fixed your pipes, so is the electrician that earthed your dangerous kitchen light, so is the cleaner who successfully removed that near impossible stain on the carpet. He goes round detaining people who didn't show up to court, and gets paid.

For me, it makes being a bounty hunter look like a lot of fun. The danger, the thrill of the hunt, the reward... Bet it feels good to be him.

Oh I'm not saying anything bad about Dog himself, he has made quite a life for himself and his family. It's nothing against HIM, just that he's hardly a "hero" for his profession as so many people seem to think he is. People seem to think he works for or with law enforcement which isn't so, he works for himself. He's not out there catching random criminals, he's simply looking out for his own interests-which is great, as it's his business, but heroic?? Nah.

    • Yea. Professionally, perhaps not a hero, but it's employed, at least? heh

As a person, might be different story.

I guess the issue becomes so vague, with so much criteria with which to assess another, that the entire thing becomes almost too convoluted to consider. o.O

My question was just basically why people think he's a hero for being a bail bondsman, not about him personally. I guess it's more a matter of people not knowing or understanding what bail bondsmen do? ;)

People are like "oh yeah he gets those bad guys" but not realizing he's the one who got them out of jail to begin with.
