No, I don't think it's brainwashing. Every kid deserves a childhood. So what if they don't know the truth about Santa and they think love will always find a way? It doesn't matter it's lies - they're happy. That's all that matters. And now you have the happy memories.

Sort of, like they portray that men will go to extremes for the woman they love. I have never encountered such a thing.

Of course they do, just like... pretty much everything else. What counts as "brainwashing"? What counts as a "false idea"?

I haven't seen many grown-up movies that portrayed life very realistically either. What's with adults, why do they still cling onto a hope that they can become some kind of super ninja or pull off a major heist? Or be like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman? Same thing, except we should know better.

Let kids have their childhood, you can't throw the real adult world at a child when even adults can't process that world.

    • I agree kids should have their childhood. But personally, it's kind of scary to know that people are spending BILLIONS of dollars on Disney merchandise for their kids to have a good childhood. For example, the Disney's Princess Franchise is a multi billion dollar industry and its one of the main incomes for the Disney corporation. I believe that's giving the message that you have to buy Disney product to have a great childhood. I just think it's reinforcing materialistic value to kids at such young age, especially in America.

Disney movies are great, no doubt about it. But to me, Disney is like McDonald's; it's great as a treat once in a while but when you start overindulging in them, it's going to rot your mind, especially for a child. Considering people are spending billions of dollars (too much imo) on Disney products, I can't help but wonder if this can cause serious negative effects on a developing child.

We spend billions of money on fast food, which I think many people agree it's one of the main factors of the obesity problems in the US. Just like how fast food industry factors in the obesity problem (along with lack of exercise), I am wondering if Disney products are also a factor in the US's materialistic value.

I'm probably sounding a bit paranoid but it's just something I've been pondering about.

Anyways, thank you for the post, wigsplitz. Always a pleasure reading your comments on this site and I respect your opinion on this matter. I'm really interested to see if you have further inputs about the topic. :)

Oh, I thought you were just talking about the effect of the fairy tales!

Raising kids without giving in to the temptations of fast food and toys too often is hard, and it takes a whole lot of committment and being 'the bad guy' a lot!! Even when you have the best intentions, it's still hard!!

The hardest times I've had with this kind of stuff is actually from family members. They don't understand, or think it's 'cruel' that I don't buy, buy, buy and take the kids out to eat. They give birthday and Christmas gifts that literally make me sick. For example, one relative has so far given my children 2 video game systems. My girls are 4 and 6. Ugggh, vidoe games?? A lot of times, with gifts, it's so hard because you can't always intercept the gift before the child gets it, or when the relatives are close it's kind of an insult if I were to return the gift and have them ask about it, it's uncomfortable. I mean, you can't even really say anything about the type of gifts because it just seems out of line to me. I don't really know what to do about this, honestly, I haven't figured it out. I've suggested things when they've asked about a gift idea but it goes ignored, I guess because they don't see it as 'fun'.

I think I've done a good job as far as what's in my control, I am only disappointed in myself for letting them watch a bit more TV than they should.

Yes, I do see the 'buy, buy, buy' crap as bad, and it seems like people don't even notice what they're doing, it's like it has become normal to 'have to' have certain things, or that having 'things' makes you better or whatever. So, yes, I suppose I agree that people have been brainwashed.

But Inuendos and Sexual Situations are in Real Life, the Chances are if they put it in the same Movie as... Jack Sparrow? then they would proably forget about it anyway.

All media is going to turn to brainwashing, even if it isn't intended. Just look at science fiction and technophobia!

Forget brainwashing! Disney traumatizes children. At least that's the case with me and my friends and co-workers. Actually, being traumatized by Disney's not so bad; we all tell stories and laugh about our most traumatizing Disney moments. Bambi's mom getting shot or Dumbo's mom put in jail and in shackles always comes up on top! Lol!
