Do you think copyright should be abolished?

Does it limit society's freedom to evolve on old ideas, and create new things? Is it only fair that people should profit on their ideas and have them protected? Choose which answer best applies to your opinion, leave a comment if you'd like.

Yes, abolished entirely. 11
No, it should remain the way it is. 26

Perhaps what should change is not the concept of copyrights nor the protection(s) they offer, but the way the laws are applied, enforced, and litigated.

There are, all too often, laws which are inadequate with regard to technological developments, for example, and the application and enforcement of said laws is difficult because of the types of concepts being protected...not to mention the predilections of who are litigationhappy creating problems not because they are legitimately upholding intellectual property rights, but simply to thwart others in some way, or because they are out to make money at the expense of their client.

I think copyright laws are good the way they are now.

    Offtopic:
What should be limited are software patents. There are already patents like "a graphical interface for a user to navigate through a set of horizontally aligned menus". Yeah, very creative...

I agree. And "move a window by dragging your finger over the screen" I thought about that in the mid-90s but didn't know patents were about THAT and not the lines of C++ code that actually creates the experience. I could've been rich :(

    Copyrights are important.

You deserve the right to receive credit and pay for your work.

If you abolished copyrights then some jerk could just steal your work and present it as his or her own.

As an artist who is one day going to rely on my works being copyrighted to me to put food on my table, I think copyright laws need to be kept within reason to protect the livliehoods of artists.

Thats not to say the current system isnt corrupt... Perfect example being Jhonen Vasquez not making a cent off of Invader Zim merchandising... Nickelodeon essentially stole his copyright.

Jhonen Vasquez? The name sounds kinda familiar.... I had no idea that Nickelodeon stole Invader Zim. I almost feel ashamed of buying the merchandise.

I know disney has stolen a lot of things. The took "Lion King" from Kimba the White Lion.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimba_the_White_Lion

There was a huge controversy over it.

I think the laws should stay as they are.

Getting attribution for your works and suing those that steal them.

This current law is trying to take things way too far.

I don't think it should be abolished, but it pisses me off that when I put hard work into an AMV, upload it on youtube, and then a day later it's blocked, or taken down, or the music is muted.

What if someone took your AMV and put their music over it? Would you let them do that?

Abolish all copyright laws! They are most anti-free trade and anti-free market shit ever! Copyright laws are government created monopolies that are always being used being used by greedy corporation to destroy their competition. (I.e. SOPA, PIPA laws).

So how are authors/musicians/script writers/anyone else that works in the entertainment industry going to get any money? Or are they all just going to starve to death?

They can still make money off of their works. It won't be as much as they would normally make though. <BR><BR>The world is better off without copyrights. Because what if an artist doesn't get his work copyrighted on time and someone else steals his idea and gets it copyrighted as if it were their own, then the real artist can't get any money at all because as far as the law is concern the theif was the "real" artist. That's what I hate about copyright laws.

I believe the entertainment industry should be less selective and give a chance to everyone who wishes to have one. You are making your own songs? well good. Let me listen to them and I'll decide how much to pay you for them based on how much I liked them. Solved.
You have an idea for a movie? You wrote a moviescript?
Well good. I give you the money to shot the movie, we start distributing it to theaters or we skip the theater and go straight for the web. You liked it very much? you give me ten bucks, you didn't? Just give me one buck. Solved.
You wanna distribute the copyrighted material to other people? it's fine with me, Just pay an extra fee or make sure the other people you are going to give the songs to pay me as well. You wanna use part of my work to do something with it? Like use a loop from one of my songs? Pay me. Give me my share. You wanna go around the place singing my songs? wait till My tour is over, then do it. Then pay me.Till then,do it in private. For free. It's only fair. And if you don't pay me what you owe me then I'll pay you what you owe me!
And by the way, point these rays right towards your own damn skulls and blow your own brains out.

But if people decide how much they want to pay for something, they'll pay as little as possible. So they will pay 1p for it. That idea would only work in a world of selfless honest people, which this definitely isn't.

Think of your favourite book/tv programme/film. Now imagine someone wrote a really dumb spin-off that totally ruined the whole thing for you. Still think copyright should be abolished?
