You always hear the phrase "drugs and alcohol" but alcohol can essentially be considered a drug.

Alcohol IS a drug, and a legal drug which makes it the most lethal. It's sad that alcohol is legal and pot isn't, because pot is much less harmful then they let it out to be.
Alcohol and cigarettes are drugs already. When they refer to "Drugs, they are refering to controlled substances. Alcohol and tobacco are not grouped with the "Drugs", so they are not confused with the controlled stuff.
alcahol is part of nature, its the natural fermantation process ... we have had wine for 10 thousand years ... many drugs arent , they are cooked and altered and basically super fast roads to death and un-controlable addiction .... alcahol , like gambeling is addictive to only 5% of the population , and for those unlucky 5% most of them live long mostly normal lives ... sure they will have problems , up's and downs .. but people who want to compare stuff like heroine and crack , or cocain to beer are very ignorant ... look at southamericia .. many citys are totally run by drug lords ... all the population are kids with guns ,, the citys are lawless and like hell on earth ... now look at ireland .... lots of alcahol there but it diddnt colaps into lawless chaos .. alcahol is fine ... its a strugle for some but so is cake and potato chips , pop , cigarettes etc etc ...
drink 10 bottles of beer and then we meet the morning after when i tell you that you slept with my mom, got in a fight with my dog Skippy and threw up on the cop that was puting you under arrest for pissing in the middle of sunset boulevard with a bottle of jack in your hand. Then you tell me its not a drug. I think alcool can be dangerous but shouldn't be ilegal. It's what people do with it that makes it dangerous...
alcahol shouldn't be considered a drug. it doesn't have the mind opening effects that (good) drugs have. its just a poison that makes you a little less aware of everything.
alcohol is a drug. as i cigarettes. so is sex. anything that makes you feel different then you normally would is a drug.
Alcohol is a socially accepted drug, so therefor it should not be grouped with all the other drugs. I do like alcohol myself, but I absolutely don't see myself as a drug user.
Alcohol is not a drug, people just abuse it like one. Smoking weed all the time or doing cocaine isn't healthy. Having a glass of red wine with dinner reduces the risk of heart attack and lowers blood pressure. Doctor's say that a beer is good once in a while, for some stuff it has in it, like the barly. Saying alcohol is a drug is like saying valume is a drug or cough medicine, because people can get addicted to those things too, because they abuse them. I can see that people would want to smoke weed to stimulate appetite or kill pain without lab created drugs, THerefore they make it legal for medicinal use. But Anyways, this is not a really fair post because this person was not actually looking for a clear answer and is obviously BIAST against alcohol:) THis person must have had some really bad things happen in their life in observing alcohol abuse, when obviously there are other people who abuse other things too, like drinking too much coffee, so silly.
Alcohol is a drug (or specifically ethanol is), it's just a legal one (in most countries).
People make the distinction because of the legality, but most rational folk accept that it's a substance that alters your thinking pattern and perception like any other psychoactive drug.
It's just the most commonly used and socially accepted drug. I like it.
A drug is any substance what alters normal bodily function, anyone who says alcohol isn't a drug is a fucking retard.
Alcohol is nowhere near as dangerous as the majority of what people think of as drugs. It can damage your liver if you drink at addiction levels which has knock on effects and if you drink regularly you can end up malnourished which can have a severe impact but is one of the few drugs that won't cause problems with normal levels of use.
The classification of something as a drug has nothing to do with how dangerous it is.
I know, I think the reason they make a distinction is largely based on the fact that alcohol is legal, which is because it's a lot safer than the illegal drugs. If we want to be technical caffeine is a drug even though it's good for you.
I'm starting to get nasty when I drink...I think I might quit drinking or at least cut back ...I don't think that it will be that great of loss...

I don't think that alcohol should be considered as a drug. As previously stated in another comment, it is just a natural fermentaion process. The same goes for weed. Weed isn't a drug, it's an herb, it's natural, both weed and alcohol would exist without the help of man. But drugs such as meth, coke, and heroine, on the other hand, are man made, they are not natures way of telling us to have a good time, which is why they have much harsher long term effects. Yes, alcohol is dangerous, but when used by a responsible individual, I don't see why it's so much worse than any other drug.

So, is nicotine a drug? It comes from the tobacco plant. How about LSD- it occurs naturally without man on moldy rye bread (not to be confused with penicillin). And magic mushrooms don't require man's help.
Aspirin is a drug and was "made" by synthesizing the bark of the White Willow. But no one would confuse a tree as a drug.

Why they separate the two is probably for political reasons way back in the day when the first laws were being written. No one bothered to change them or make an effort to redefine what is meant by the term. They are all chemicals, some man made, some nature made. Even our own bodies produce chemicals. Fun! I'd like some more Oxytocin please.
Nicotine may come from the tobacco plant, but when used in cigarettes or chewing tobacco, the manufacturers add in loads of chemicals, taking away the "natural" side of tobacco and making it much more harmful.

Alcohol and weed are both produced naturally, no harsh chemicals are added to the products to make them bad for the human body. And weed can be picked and grown from the wild, without any human help. And yes, fruits ferment naturally as well and that's probably how alcohol was discovered.

Incidentally, so are sugar, theobromine (in chocolate) and caffeine. People are such hypocrites, LOL.
