    1.) creates some jobs
2.) if doen right you cna make it mandatory for prositutes to get regular check ups and have to take the pill, thus preventing the spread of STDs and unwanted pregnacy
3.)We will know if a person is legally or illegally workign as a prostitute thus stop the slave trade in America (or at least decreasing it
4.)prostitues can go to the police if they are abused or hurt

The prostitutes are going to do it either way and I suspect it's safer to work in a brothel with some sort of security than a street corner.

I find myself agreeing with some (but far from all) of libertarian philosophy. Everyone has a right to do whatever they wish with their own bodies. That is, no one has a higher right to your body than you do.

Best to have some form of safety and regulation rather than the current system. Same goes for drugs.

  • Yes i know Men and women that do it, and someone needs to put out for the fat ugly people. It cuts down on rape and other crimes

The feminist viewpoint is that no woman should do it, even if she wants to. Like MissFit says, though, it's going to happen either way. Might as well be regulated and secure like it is in Holland.

Hang on. Since when is Holland secure!?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Surely the 'feminist viewpoint' is that women should have equal opportunities to men and should be allowed to pursue any job/career they want?

      • dappled

Yes, but it's never as easy as all that. Feminists believe that prostitution as an industry devalues and objectifies women. That the choice to 'buy' one aspect of a woman as a service both gives the wrong message about how women should be viewed, and also shifts the power balance towards men who feel they can avail themselves of this service.

Then those feminists are fucking idiots letting liberal propaganda be shoved down their throats (pun intended). I mean, has it ever occurred to any of them that a co-operatively run Union can be the model of the industry? That, like Kiwi said at the top, Pimps (or Madams) need not be involved? That, given our current state in America, the only thing truly standing in the way of any female becoming CEO of a multinational industry is their willingness to cut throats on their way to the top?

It's a complicated issue and there are points in each favour. For instance, countries which have more tolerant prostitution laws tend to have lower incidences of rape. The problem for me is that suggesting that a woman can be bought impacts on every single woman, everywhere in the world, whether she is a prostitute, a rape victim, or neither.

When talking about prostitutes, we tend to think of prostitutes. It's not a big enough consideration. When talking about anything, we should think about everything.

When I talk of prostitutes, I think of Sex Workers, ie: contractible labor of a specialized and highly technical industry. To say or imply that they can still be bought is to imply three things:

              1. That prostitutes will always be victims and never their own freelance bosses.

              2. That contracts between consenting adults with stipulations in regard to sex are null and void to the benefit of the providing party (making all marriages borne of equality between the sexes irrelevant and returning them to a chattel property concept...the female being the chattel).

              3. That the wages and rights of labor itself cannot be determined in any part by the laboring party (making all Unions useless and marking us all as high-class or low-class variations of a literal Wage Slave, or quasi-Serf).

              Comment Hidden ( show )
        • True. Although if a woman don't consider it devaluing and she's comfortable with it, and it supports her financially there's nothing wrong with it IMO. Of course, most prostitutes aren't doing what they do out of choice, many are pressured/forced into the business, mistreated by clients and pimps, only do the job to feed their family, or their drug habit.

Also, what about Male Prostitution? Plenty of women (or men) want to get their beavers braided by a professional. Shouldn't these men have a right to operate under the protection of the law?

    Neither for nor against.

I would rather people understand what legalization would actually entail.

    1) First of all it IS legal in Nevada. The employees have to have medical examinations every week or two if I'm not mistaken. Plus, you have to be licensed I think.

    2) Would legalization actually stop people from illegally turning tricks? See #1 ... there are steps the prostitutes have to take if it turns legal

    3) Would this prevent underage people from turning tricks? Again see #1.

    4) I am a bit curious as to what the pimps would do... especially if they suddenly had to register all their "employes" and give them medical care. Would they do this or would they just make them turn tricks anyway? ... I mean obviously they didn't care about breaking laws in the first place, why would they start obeying laws on it now?

So, I'm not for or against it... I just don't know if it would actually change anything.

    • I get what you are saying. I do think legalization can accomplish a lot though.

      1. Make the license relatively easy to get and affordable for the individual, as for a "pimp" or storefront, it should be like getting a liquor license or such. Tough and watched over pretty well, and not soooo cheap.

      2. Make fines for practising without a license higher than the cost of a license.

      3. Fines and license fees could (help) fund clinics so they could provide low-cost exams.

      4. Reduced burden on the court/jail/prison system.

      5. People caught without a license (to include "pimps") could be subject to extreme fines and/or prison terms. Make it more worth it to follow the law than not.

      6. Be able to tax earnings. If a license is applied for, the individual will be "on the radar" so to speak. A business ("pimp") would also obviously be REQUIRED to report earnings.

      7. People seeking the services of prostitutes can have the security of having the knowledge that they are visiting a prostitute that is clean and tested regularly. As it is now, it's a total gamble....a gamble that people take all the time over and over, needlessly, and men bring diseases home to their unsuspecting wives, including AIDS, that's just stupid and avoidable.

I don't see how it could be worse if legalized...Problems will always exist but would it be no better or worse? I think it would be better.

I still don't see it working.

The main form of convincing pimps to play along seems to be heavy fines.

I don't see it working. You still have to actually CARE about your employees.

And considering that many pimps get their "staff" from underage runaways or other people they take advantage of... I don't see them as being productive partners in a legalization effort. At least not if it means giving up their ways.

That's the other aspect - how many of these prostitutes are actually willing? I know someone who did undercover-cop work with them. What she said was the older prostitutes had that attitude of "This is what we do; we don't know how to do anything else.. but those kids out there, they have a chance to get something better."

Somehow, even if legalized, I don't think they'll get something better under the hand of a pimp.

It would be better for them to enter the porn industry to be honest. It's legal and it's the ONE industry where women earn far more then the men do. Plus they get medical care. And they don't get slapped unless it's part of the contract.

Uhh, its asking if you support OR oppose legalizing prostitution.

Do you want prostitution to be legal, or should it stay illegal?

      That is the question

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • One of the options should have been: "I don't care."

The only thing involving the human body that i dont feel you should be able to decide about is the issue of abortion, as it deals with another life. Other tan that, do what you want! Prostitution wouldent be nearly so degrading if it was legal. Plus, the prostitutes would be more protected from STDs, as testing would be a regular thing.

The only reason it is illegal is because the goverment doesnt know how to tax it.

It's all about the money people!!!

    Prostitution isn't a woman's only club people.

I say regulate it, and then maybe the pimps wouldn't be the only ones who can get away with wearing those crazy outfits.

I support legalization. Adult women should be able to do what they want with their bodies with adult men. Legal status of the profession would help to stop the exploitation of minors and immigrant women. Prostitutes working in a business with security would be a lot safer than getting into cars with strangers. Regulated prostitution would require testing for HIV and STDs. Also should require training and licensing like any other job that poses risks.

Prostitution is sick and totally perverted. I think prostitution should be banned permanently and if getting caught practicing it, it should be the BOOB CAGE first and then the SLAMMER for life.

And you're stating that willfully having sex with someone for personal gain (which is pretty much the same as marrying an elderly millionaire) is punishable equal to murder?
