Do you support disinformation?

Definition:

"Disinformation is intentionally false or inaccurate information that is spread deliberately. For this reason, it is synonymous with and sometimes called black propaganda. It is an act of deception and false statements to convince someone of untruth."

Take campaigns. One major one is the anti-smoking campaign. They use inaccurate information to discourage people from smoking. Some people might say this is OK since smoking is "bad" so who cares if they're lying, the end justifies the means. Some other people may say that disinformation is never acceptable. Which category do YOU fall under?

I support disinformation. 10
I do not support disinformation. 39

This is why I hate statistics. Numbers can easily be manipulated. 4 out of 5 dentists agree.

  • Using a lie as foundation for something true is risky as once the base is destroyed, all the rest built upon it comes tumbling down.

True, it may give you what you want in the short term, but the short-lived success warps your understanding and in the long term you are destroyed.

The result of this poll isn't going to show much. Most of the people who support disinformation are probably gonna click "I do not support disinformation."

I can't say I support it or don't. It depends on how you use it. To me the important point is that targeting someone with disinformation is a hostile act. Some times, such as in war, that's completely justified.

But using disinformation on your own citizens or other "friendlies" in not acceptable.

I'd kind of like to know this too. I know the anti-smoking campaigns are manipulative but I don't really see the lies that I see in regular TV advertising.

I hate being lied to, misinformed or disinformed. I like to know the truth regardless of how good or bad it may be.

So no I do not agree with it. I also think that people should think before they believe everything. Think about things in a different way. Everything is ran on a system even out government. When you give to something you take from the other. If someone helps you lose weight what are they getting in return? Do they actually have a motivation for helping you? Is what you doing a scam? A long with this people will always find away to get away with bad things through technicalities in the law. So you really can never stop this completely.

Some of these things are self explanatory. They are just bad for you and people should already know this. They also use this the other way like saying Soda was the magical cure for all ailments. When in reality carbonated drinks just settle an upset stomach. They use it in commercials saying you will lose weight which this does not often work and makes most of the people trying it fatter. No I do not think that people should use false information to push something. However some things you should really figure out on your own. Inhaling tar and random chemicals can not be good for your health. Think about what is really in the diet pill. Think about where tax money actually comes from. realize that banks dont have all the money you give them. They are mearly distributing it so when you all panic and take it out all at once half of you will not get your money back since they do not have all your money!

I don't know. I dislike censorship and genuinely believe people would be better served by living in a world that had no concept of lying. But that's the idealist me.

The realist know that, like with Communism, it only works if everyone plays with a straight deck. Our very human nature often precludes that. If I was in government, I'd probably soon realise that "open government" is naive, at best.

In precis, we can't have what we aspire to because we don't deserve it.

I don't really support it, but I can't help but think that I may end up spreading disinformation at some point in the future.

I rarely believe things that I read anyways, so it doesn't matter to me if it's disinformation or not. I'll still be skeptical anyways.

No, it isn't acceptable. I don't think it's OK at all. It's wrong.
