Do you suport gay marriage?

I know that this can be quite a sensitive question to ask. But where i live right now, the government is deciding whether or not to legalize gay marriage. Personally, i think people should have the right to do what they want with there lives, but there are others out there who disagree. My brother, for instance, decided to go ahead and post things on facebook, like trying to convince people to go ahead and sign a petition against it.

I'm just curious to see what people on this site think. Please comment.

    I have yet to hear a non-religious defense as to why gays should not get married. I honestly don't even see this as an issue; marriage should be allowed to any couple who wants it simple as that.

      I have heard a few.

      "Why should gay people get special rights?" Somehow, some people think allowing gay marriage gives gays more rights than straight people. They can't understand that everyone would have the same rights, which would be to marry the person of their choice regardless of sex. They will argue that everyone currently has equal rights and gays CAN get married, just not to a member of the same sex, allowing same-sex would tip the scales in favor of gays. It makes absolutely no sense.

      "What's next, people marrying a dog (or a horse, or a houseplant....)?" Again, incredibly stupid but I have heard so many people say this.

      "Marriage is for creating a family. Gay people can't have children so there's no point in them getting married." But not every straight couple can or do have children and marriage as far as the state is concerned is nothing more than a legal contract that affords certain protections and rights, it's not a promise or obligation to have children. Funny how the people who use this argument aren't out there trying to dissolve childless straight marriages.

        But then, why can'take gay people get married? If you are a woman who likeshould titties, then you should be able to marry a pair, along with the personality and all else in toe, just as men can today...

      I have heard arguments regarding the semantics of it. I do know a few people who are opposed to it for non-religious reasons and it generally has to do with either the definition of marriage or that they just don't recognize homosexual couples as being valid in the way heterosexual couples are.

        Interesting. However, I have this internal feeling that that mindset seems like moral conditioning as opposed to actual thought. Basically I just think that they've been preached at long enough to make them believe what they hear.

    Oh my gosh, I'd be so bothered if my brother did something like that! He's a very tolerant man, so I'd probably go over to his house right away to find out what had happened.

    I support it and have never been against it, or even ambivalent about it.

    I support it but I'm really ashamed of humanity for not allowing love because of their damn religion or something. It's even worse when they say if gay marriage should be legal then so should be bestiality and pedophilia. That's fucked up.

    Of course I do. Gays and lesbians have just as much right to get married just as any straight couple does.

    I believe that it should be legalized. People who are in same-sex marriages deserve the same amount of rights that a straight couple would automatically have. I do agree with religion being forced into topics especially, since each human being should be allowed to have rights. Their rights should not be allowed to be kept away from them. I hope that the Supreme Court will make the right decision.
