Do you sometimes reject scientific explanation in favor of mystery?

Do you ever purposely ignore the scientific explanation for how things work or come to be in favor of holding onto the mystery of it? Is it more pleasurable to you to see some things with wonder and magic rather than a cold scientific answer?

Yes, I do this a lot! 5

Science does not remove the wonder for me. I understand how a seed turns into a plant but it does not make the flower any less pretty. Science is a kind of magic to me.

Hiatus from trolling to applaud this answer. What's so wonderless about scientific reasoning? Fibonacci numbers in plants; our material kinship with the cosmos; the invention of the fleshlight... I could go on.

  • Sometimes. I absolutely love fireworks, but after knowing how they work, not so fascinating. Some things are better left to the imagination ^_^

  • I don't think you guys are understanding me here. I mean, for example, do you enjoy looking at the blue sky and not caring to know why it's blue?

  • For me the science is the beauty and there's always a mystery when you get down to the nano physics of it all.

The "mystery" lies in the profound complexity of all things that only science can reveal.

    • Science doesn't reveal anyting, it merely breaks down and names things that already existed long before. My question simply asks, what if I don't care to know? Not knowing the exact process, or not caring, makes some things much better for me. Mind you, SOMEtimes.

Science reveals all. Take skin, for example. One is naturally inclined to think of skin as a simple, rubbery substance, until science reveals its molecular makeup, its processes of healing and rejuvenation, its vital role in defending the body, and an infinite number of things I could not describe.

        • But that all existed before 'science' described it. My skin will continue to grow and shed whether I know 'why' or 'how'. It's like the nerd that comes up and ruins the moment by saying....'well,actually, ...'

My point was that everything is simplified without science. A simplified viewpoint allows for the development of erroneous ideas about how things work and came about.

Sometimes I wish weird things did happen.
    I later realize there's always a good reason. :(

I probably do, subconsciously. I like to emphasise the point when an explanation is merely one theory and therefore may or may not be true. The mystery is actually quite enjoyable, but so is acting superior to scientists :)

It's a good question. My personal viewpoint is that seeing something mysterious or beautiful and also understanding it is a better position than one of those alone. Sometimes the thing is beautiful and sometimes the explanation is. Sometimes both. So knowing both is very beautiful indeed in those cases.

Understanding how something works gives a deeper texture to the beauty of it.

lol, I genuinely believed it was a good question. It was interesting. Kind of wish I'd asked it myself, to by honest. :P

Where there is a scientific explanation I'm happy to accept it. I don't think knowing the causes takes away the beauty of things like a spectacular sunset, for example, but I also find it exciting that there are so many things left which we don't yet understand and maybe never will ("If the brain were so simple we could understand it, we would be so simple we couldn't.")
As I've grown up, I've become a lot more rational and logical, though. When I was at school I would have preferred a picture or a poem about a flower to dissecting a blossom and identifying the various components. Now I gravitate more towards the analytical side.

If nobody cared then where would we be? I crave to know how everything works but I am a scientist so I suppose it's in my nature now.

Haha I wondered the same. But the word favor isn't spelled favour. That's the only thing that makes me think its not him and it seems too short of a paragraph

Wow, I know you and I know we're not each other, but I do tend to say "flying fuck" a lot and don't know many others who do. I often say "airborne intercourse" as the nice version. And I have a sarcasm symbol. I'm starting to wonder whether I'm having some kind of blackouts and you are actually me typing in some kind of fugue state.

I'm also really rather curious to know who you are. I'm guessing you're flutterhigh pretending to be me for a laugh. In which case, good job. It genuinely was rather good.

This is funny. I got the biggest discussion going on, your comment was devoid of any dregs of wit, and judging by your response it would appear that your airborne fuck has indeed been given. Some trifecta of irony.

You sir, are no dappled. Certainly no flutterhigh.

Well spotted on the favor. I'd also have said "holding on to" as opposed to "holding onto". And rambled on a bit. :)

No, due to the fact that I'm not deluded. Although I can see the appeal of seeing life through rose-tinted glasses, like a child who can't believe that Santa Claus isn't real, I'm too busy living in the real world to believe in a lie.

No because some mysteries don't have a scientific answer, at least not yet.
