Do you return gifts you're given for a refund?

My friend gifted me a Bisexual Pride shirt that said "I like my men the way I like my women."

I DO NOT like my men the way I like my women.

It didn't reflect who I was so I returned it to the small shop in the mall he got it from. I got fifty bucks for the shirt and used it to buy a pink, purple, and blue striped skirt from Spencers.

Later on he asks me when I'll wear the shirt. I told him I returned it and bought a skirt for 26 dollars since the phrase doesn't reflect who I am and I was eying the skirt for a while. He gets all pissy and loud and tells me that he wants the rest of the money back. I told him I wasn't giving him shit.

This isn't the first time he's gotten upset. He once got upset when I told him why I refused to wear the progressive pride flag. The brown part of the rainbow looks like someone took a shit on it and I'm not wearing dookie.

Do you guys go to the store and return the gifts you're given or do you keep them?

I throw them in the trash, in front of the person.

I agree, I’ve received a few random t-shirts I’d never wear I’m public and I use them as pajamas. Telling someone you returned their gift is pretty harsh.

Yeah but imagine someone gave you a tshirt to describe your sexuality and it was wrong. lol. I think it’s rude and immature in the first place.

That’s a fair point, I would probably have kept it but let them know that it was inaccurate. For context I live in the South of England and this level of “British politeness” may not be expected every where.

I would regift it as a joke to a completely different friend group. Lol

So even in attempting to be supportive, they're being offensive to the LGBT community

There's literally no winning with some groups

I've received one in the past that I don't particularly like but I'm greatful for it.

I don't know how gifting works on your side of the world, but in Europe you don't give a gift with the receipt...
So if you want to refund a gift, you'd have to ask for the receipt.
Works for clothing items that didn't fit right, but would be considered extremely rude otherwise.

I've gotten crappy gifts too, I just put them in the basement, waiting to be thrown out when it gets too full with other crap and I decide it's time for a cleanup.

However... if I get an overly preachy lgbt gift that tries to force shit on me, I won't accept it. I'll either throw it away, or give it back the moment I see it.
I'm straight and I like my women how I like my women.
I'm not attracted to men, so go away. Don't force anything on me!
The more you try to push something on me, the more I fight back!

Unless it's Keira Knightley naked in my bed, then by all means... arrange it!

I only do returns if it's a literal duplicate. Otherwise it's rude. But also, why is this person who you don't seem to like very much giving you presents?

You don't return a bad gift for money.. You regift or donate later

I've never done that and I would never do that. I keep all clothes I am gifted and I wear it occasionally to be nice and so that I can't be guilt tripped for not appreciating the gifts.

"My friend gifted me a Bisexual Pride shirt that said 'I like my men the way I like my women.'

I DO NOT like my men the way I like my women."

That is the funniest thing I've read this year so far.

But no, I usually never return things. If I do, I tell the person who got it for me what I'm going to do with it beforehand, not after the fact. Returning it when that person is waiting to see you use it, and then going "nah, I actually thought your gift belonged in a sewer pipe so I arranged to have it put there, thanks for the money sucker" is very rude.

I can see why your friend got upset about it, especially when it was $50. You probably should have given him the money back.

if its a poorly thought out gift i tell the giver so and refuse to accept it

example is when novelty landline telephones were a thing i had a relative buy me a p-51 mustang (ww2 fighter airplane) phone because i had purchased a ford mustang that year
