I can play the violin - it started off as "self taught" if you can call it that LOL.
It was my final year in Primary school. I was in the music room and came across a violin, so I took it out of its case and began to strum it like a ukulele to the horror of my music teacher. She placed me on detention for a week where I had to "learn" to play the violin. From that incident I played for almost 4 years.
You might be able to teach yourself a simple folk fiddle style were intonation and technique aren't that important. But any half-serious fiddler takes lesson and for the entire string family (violin, viola, cello) you do need lessons. And they are hard to learn.
I took lessons, then played/self taught myself - and when I went back to lessons years later, had to unlearn a lot of stuff I was doing wrong. Because it involves fine motor control that unlearning isn't easy.
Strings are unlike guitars/bass guitars.
Guitars/bass are far, far easier to play initially making them accessible and you can go quite far on self instruction. It is too bad in a way that they have become so common place.
If you play guitar/bass you should be required to take up one orchestral instrument to make up for the cultural crime of such overly homogenized music now-abouts and untold hearing damage (joke)! Just kidding.
Q: How to you get a guitarist to be quiet?
A: Put sheet music in front of him.
(PS - I play guitar too).
I would love to be able to play it. It is such a emotional instrument.
You might be able to self teach yourself by watching violin lessons on youtube.
I once had a violin when I was quite young. I never learned how to be any good at it though. As a matter of fact, I distinctly remember not being able to make the thing play music at all. It was probably WAY out of tune or something. I didn't know anything about it at the time though.
I play the violin and because of the nature of the instrument, it's pretty impossible to self-teach unless you have a great background understanding of music and an impeccable ear. Another thing, is that you need a teacher in the way of helping you with difficult things like flexing your wrist.
But if you're poor, try youtube, there's some neat music gurus who have some free violin lessons on their channels. And get yourself a mirror! You can't always see your technique simply looking through your bow down the fingerboard.
I play the viola, which I guess means that I can play the violin fairly well.
I love this instrument. My ex played, so I picked it up a few times, but it's really hard to learn.
No, but it is possible. Of course your level of success hinges almost entirely upon the material you're using.
I used to play. Well, I say "play"... I don't think I was very good :/ I wasn't self-taught, but I imagine it's possible to self-teach. The very first violinist in the world would *have* to have been self-taught.
I played in middle school and high school...i don't think it'd be too hard to learn.
