Aaarrrr! The only surfin' I be doin' is on the waves, searchin' for me booty! Ain't that right Polly? ...Polly? Argh, looks like she flew off with that Amish Sailor, the scallywag! To Davy Jones' Locker, ye mutinous, yellow-bellied scoundrel!

I download some songs off YouTube, and I presume that counts as pirating. I only do that if the artist behind it is already very rich and successful. I don't do it often either, only a maximum of a couple of songs a week. But I know and accept that is a weak moral argument. I honestly think pirating music is morally indefensible and I know that makes me a hypocrite. Even knowing that, I still do it sometimes :L

It isn't really piracy, but it breaks the YouTube ToS.

Downloading from Youtube isn't illegal as far as I remember so long you keep it as a private copy... Well at least concerning German law... I don't really know if it's that different in the US etc.

The people sharing the content on Youtube do not usually own the rights to it. That's also why Youtube doesn't offer downloading as a service for all content.

So I would say that it is generally illegal (with some exceptions).

  • No, because many of the bands I listen to are small time and are often self financing their records.

Michael Gira of Swans used to release other people's music, but now he can't afford to do so because of pirating.

I'd rather pay and get great music, than steal and fuck everyone who isn't on a major label. Because if that happens, everything will become the same commercial junk due to there no longer being an alternative to fagstep and Bieber.

And seriously, people who think pirating doesn't hurt are stupid, look at Australia's film industry lol.

If I couldn't listen to music or watch new movies for free, then I would never listen to music or see any new movies. So the way I see it, those people/companies aren't losing any money from me, and I am doing nothing wrong.

Yes. But I always go to the live show when that band comes to town and buy some merch to make up for it. Maybe drop a 5er in the tip jar.

I haven't got a computer, but besides that I wouldn't know how anyways. I still try to figure out how to put music on my phone.

No. I don't buy a lot of music, so I can afford to pay for it — and anyway, it just feels wrong to be stealing stuff from hardworking artists.

i used to do it but limewire doesnt work anymore :( lol ... the government takes pirating so serious these days too so i kinda dont wana get caught either... you can get fined like 5grand for 1 pirated song depending on who the artist is :S and theres a vid on youtube and a guy who made a pirating site got like 30-40 years in prison

Usually if I like it enough I will purchase it.

Downvote me all you want because this will most likely be an unpopular opinion but CDs are too expensive considering living costs and the current state of the economy. You might be able to purchase CDs or DVDs for a while but after a while, it all adds up and becomes quite costly and impractical.

I think it prices went down and there were online means whereby user security isn't compromised and the music was more widely available and accessible to buy then a lot more people would be inclined to actually get the music via legal means and the artists would get pain (everyone would be happy).

I highly doubt downloading music from sites containing free uploaded CD's will send You to jail, it the uploader that would go to jail NOT the downloader.
