Do you notice the movement of the stars?

Do you notice the movement of the stars in your night sky?

Can you easily locate at least a few constellations or star patterns and know how they will "move" or appear over the course of hours and also through different seasons?

I don't notice the stars in detail. I don't pay attention to this. 15
I know some stars/constellations but I doubt I could find them. 8
I can maybe recognize a few stars/patterns but not easily. 5
I watch the night sky often and definitely know some patterns well. 14
I am an amateur/hobby astronomer! Of course I do! 0

Yes, it's part of my job but I'm not an astronomer. 0

Oh yes I do of course. I position myself by standing still and look towards a particular part of the sky for a period of 12 hours or so. It is a favourite pastime for me.

    Highly recommended. Try it.

Why yes, yes I do notice these types of things. It's a part of my life. But not my job.

I do sometimes. I love looking at the stars on a clear night thinking what else is out there and just day dreaming. Or maybe I should call it "night" dreaming but I'm still awake. Its so relaxing.

No I do not.. I dont really pay attention to such things though. I would rather be watching tv, or reading or something. Trying to find constellations and movement in the stars frustrates me. I can not fly a kite very well either. Yeah I guess maybe I am just not that creative.

Although the stars do move relative to one another, and relative to other massenergy bodies in the Universe, for a human to notice this, is nearly impossible, in a short time frame.
What you are really 'noticing', is the rotation of Planet Earth on its axis and the progression of Planet Earth in its orbit around the Sun. Planet Earth has an axial tilt, which changes our perspective, from season to season.

The 'patterns' of the constellations, are usually an illusion, with most stars separated by vast distances. We need a three dimensional map of the stars.

    • Yes, I know and that's why I put "move" in quotes. I went for simplicity in my description. Thanks for pointing out that I wasn't scientifically accurate, it may benefit others who read this. I thought of putting a disclaimer/sidebar in the post but ultimately didn't. Sorry.

A 3D map of the stars would be amazing!

If you've not seen it, check out this extension for Chrome.

        It's 100,000 stars represented in a 3D model.

To be honest, I have never paid much attention to the stars. For me, they are simply there.
