Do you notice the construction of new homes in your town?

No matter what city I live in, I always notice more and more houses and apartment buildings going up. Is this normal? Is it like this in other places of the world too?

I sometimes wonder about where all of the materials come from to make all of this mass construciton possible. I wonder if wondering that is normal too.

I am from North America and YES I do see lots of new homes being built 19

My city has an urban growth boundary. It helps keep sprawl down and the farmland intact. Construction still happens but land developers have to get creative to support the population growth and accommodate the need for multi-function neighborhoods. However the fancy new condos that were built a few years ago still sit empty. People can't afford to live in them. And they want to build more? The streets are crowded, the houses empty, and businesses die everyday. I don't know what the solution is, but building more houses that people can't afford is not the solution.

And people should wonder where the materials come from. But I don't think many do. There is a business here that does professional deconstruction. They tear down buildings and houses and salvage everything they can. If you need to replace your bathroom sink, it is easy to find a used one. If you want to retile your floors, go explore the halls of used building supplies.

In my area, they cleared out a forest to start building new homes. They did the same thing up the street. My house is only five years old, so they did the same thing here.

I'm from pretty much the most crowded country in Europe and there is virtually nowhere to build without reducing what little green space we have left.

Consequently, I see lots of familiar buildings being torn down and replaced with apartments (or occasionally homes). My first job was in a beautiful historic building that had plenty of links to the past of my town before I was born. My parents and grandparents and great-grandparents would all have used it regularly and I feel weird that I was the last generation to know it.

Although we have plenty of historical things here (going back 5000 years), my personal history of just a few years ago is being erased.

I don't live in the city, but I've noticed how things change with time and it makes me sad.
Around where I live, there used to be farms and each year it be an exciting process to see the farms change with the seasons. It was a magical experience and then sometime around the mid-2000's the farmers started to sell their land. They left and their crops were torn down. The land was cleared and they started to build monstrous houses and a middle school. Now there's very little space left. The houses are ugly and most are unsold. Yet, they continue to destroy and create more. It's an ongoing cycle. The curious thing is that if it happens in a city, then I don't get as sad. Yes, all the memories that happened in the building will go, but it's nice to look forward to something "better" taking its place.

My city usually re-builds the older houses in downtown. It's the new towns and cities that are constantly building. Doesn't bother me too much though, I live in a place that's so empty that we could build like this for 50 more years and not even touch the mid section of my country. From city to city it's either trees, prairie, mountain or tundra.

Where I live, there's construction going on all the time. A lot of the new houses aren't very well made, though.

  • Where I live, the downtown area, and some other parts have changed so much from since I moved here,it's damn SHOCKING!!I can hardly believe it,and the same thing goes for my hometown as well.So many things from the downtown area where I'm originally from are totally gone!Things that ive enjoyed gone forever-why the fuck would I ever want to go back!It probably has to do with the change of the population-Everything now is catered to the fuckin SPICKS!!!of all things!!

Yeah, I have noticed suburbs going up. New apartment complexes being built and the old ones are turned into housing projects, meaning those parts of town become virtual ghettos.

I understand moving into a bigger house because of a big family, but I don't see why the hell less then 5-6 people would need a McMansion for fuck's sake.

This has happened where I live as well. There are barely any wooded areas left. The new houses are either bought, given to low income families, or left there empty with squatters. There are just way too many people here.

Where I live I see new housing occasionally but it doesn't really register with me. I hadn't even thought about it until this post, but there's been a couple of small neighbourhoods built in last few years :P One was a bunch of cheap and really environmentally-friendly apartments and houses, which is nice :)
