Do you need to know what a drink is before you drink it?

Today, I saw someone presented with a drink that may have been coffee and may have been tea. The person likes both hot drinks equally but sniffed the drink first to identify it. Although they couldn't say why they did it, I realised I'd have done the same.

So for anyone else who'd do it: Is there an explanation? You're going to drink it anyway. Why do you need to know before you drink it, as opposed to finding out while you drink it?

This reminds me of a story my friend was telling me about a mysterious glass of wine. He likes wine and most alcoholic beverages but when he drank this random glass he thought it was gross. Later he learned that it was mead and not wine, tasted it again and decided he liked it.

If you expect tea and get coffee you may not be happy with that first sip.

It depends. If I were at a bar there are certain alcohols I would prefer not to drink (namely Jager) so I would like to know what was in the drink.

Or like that one time I thought I was drinking water but it was lemonade... was an awkward feeling of surprise.

As long as it's nothing weird or nasty I don't think I'd be that bothered. Biggest thing I wanna know when someone brings me a glass of something is whether or not it's alcoholic, if I'm driving.

I think it might be evolutionary - when caveman existed, you smell stuff to detect rotten or otherwise bad things. Normal all the way.

Why wouldn't you? What if someone gave you a odd smelling yellowish liquid. Are you going to say bottoms up! No you are going to ask what they served you. Besides it is rude to spit it out if you do not like it.
