  • I think it is right for someone to do something you all seem to think that only the authorities are aloud to deal with world problems. Authority isnt the truth truth is authority.

So if someone feels the need to help the people in their world then they have every right to infact I find it insulting to say we arent aloud to go as far as to protect people and that only the authorities are aloud.

I think Vigilantes serve a good purpose and they inspire the average man to stand up for what is right against the people who seek to make society fearful.

If one goes around doing what they percieve as making things right, then how does that help in the long run?

Who can say what the correct punishment is? If a guy rapes your wife and gets away with it, what does he deserve to happen to him? Are you going to kill him or just butt-fuck him till he cries? If a guy kills your mom, do you kill his mom or do you kill him? The point is, there's no real right answer there and NOTHING gets solved. You are not changing the law or putting a system in place so it can't happen to anyone else. Being a vigilante is really a self-serving thing to do for someone that is overrun by hatred and bitterness and doesn't have the restraint (or smarts) needed to make an actual effective change in the world.

In general, no. But if I had the chance to kill a dictator who has slaughtered thousands of people, I would do it in a heartbeat, and I would not mind paying the price.

I love the idea of vigilantism in theory. I'm a DC fan. Hell, I've written entire novels on the subject of super heroes, so I totally understand the appeal.

That said: Vigilantism makes for great fiction, but is often quite gruesome and chaotic in reality, or at the very least distasteful. (Look up Sombra Negra, or take a look at the sheer self-important assholery of certain internet vigilante groups.) The problem is that in real life, someone who believes they are above the law is not going to be some moralistic boy scout. They are more likely to be an impulsive and emotion-driven egomaniac. It's also important to consider that in most fiction, the vigilantes have a "no-kill" rule that lets us consider them the Good Guys; but in real life, if you are attacking in quick and practical ways, you stand a pretty good chance of killing that person by accident.

Now, naturally, if you find yourself in an immediately dangerous situation where you can help someone, you should. If on the other hand you *seek out* criminal behavior to stop, you've got a little testosterone problem going on, and you need to grow up and realize comic books aren't real. I hate it, but it's true. Batman is a great piece of fiction and a tremendous and powerful symbol--let's take him as just that.

Depends on context. Generally, no- but if it happens then maybe we need to reexamine the law.

No. The law is the law and ones opinion that justice has failed them is exactly that-an opinion. Who's to say which vigilante is "right" or "just"?

I admire people who use a percieved failure in justice to make real moves to change/create laws or create solutions instead of acting out of anger.

Forgiveness is also a great virtue. If more people were more forgiving and not harboring so much anger and hatred the world would be a lot more peaceful.

    • Maybe I believe in values before some garbage written on paper, written by a person totally unaffected by the crimes around them, but c'est la vie, let people do what they do, so long as no psycho goes out and plays it to their advantage. And I'll be DAMNED if I follow a law that says anything morally wrong to me.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • No, I don't. Even if the vigilante is justified in his own actions he spreads the message to others who won't act with such virtue and gives any psycho the idea to move beyond the system.

Obedience to the law. It's important; crucial really.
