I'm suddenly finding my self fond of watching paint dry. Is this normal?

I like Harry Potter. I think the books are far better than the Twilight books, and the films are also better (although you can see the weakness of the acting in the first couple of HP films it doesn't bother me). Harry Potter is much deeper than Twilight is, and it's much more multifaceted. Like the undertones of persecution against the house elves, and the hypocrisy of the racism against muggle-born wizards and witches - you can read parts of it allegorically as a critique of "our" universe. Twilight has no substance; it exists purely to appeal to and hook in an audience. It's a very commercial, capitalist book. Harry Potter isn't exactly a literary classic, but at least it exists beyond the boundaries of "fangirl" appeal.

Potter. Liked the first movies as a kid.
And now that Ema Watson has grown up - she is a babe!

The chick from twilight is a mouth breather.
    I don't like mouth breathers.

I endured the first Harry Potter film. I can see how it might appeal to pre-teens but that's about it. I couldn't even sit through the first Twilight it was so dire. 45 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Neither. Hey you twilight fans you should check out an 80s flick called near dark. It's a far superior romantic vampire flick ;)

Ugh, really? The two movies aren't even in the same genre.

Just pointing out that you're inviting comparisons to be made between the two different genres. I would've used 'and/or' in the question to signifiy that a comparison was not intended.

I wouldn't say they were strongly different genres at all. They're both inarguably young-adult fantasy books. There are elements of action, romance and comedy in both franchises too (to varying degrees). To say that they that they both fall onto different parts of the young-adult fantasy spectrum is true, but they are definitely fairly similar in genre and they certainly can be fairly compared. Within the full, broader context of literature Harry Potter and Twilight are two very similar franchises.

The whole idea that just because two franchises are different genres they can't be compared is silly anyway. They're only incomparable if you look only at the superficial elements and ignore the themes and the writing styles and the development of the characters and that sort of thing. You could compare the Bible to Twilight if you wanted to.

I know what you mean, I was being anal. One of my subjects at uni was film and media and I would've got a flat out fail if I were to hand an assignment that compared the two (although I would've gotten points for the links you made with them). But I guess in everyday conversations you could compare apples and oranges. After all, opinions are like arseholes; everyone has one. XD
