ive personally never had any problems with the police. They can be very rude and nosey..and liars..but when you really need them, they are there for you.
ima brreeak this down.
Most White People -> Love Cops
Most Black People -> Hate cops
Most Hispanics -> Afraid that cops will send them back to mexico.
Cops are just people, some are good and some are bad.
However, many abuse their power, and all of them are in service to a corrupt government system.
When I reported a crime, they were fantastic with me. The officer who was eventually attached to my case told me off the record that the criminal had only been released a month earlier from a prison spell for manslaughter and that his additional drug trafficking convictions were going to put him back inside for a long time. He also said that he didn't think prison was the right answer, but the only answer they've got. When I had documents to sign but couldn't get to the station, he drove to my work and brought them with him, and discussed the case further. Thoroughly decent individual doing a difficult job.
However.
I've been on the other side of the coin. Due to insomnia, I took to riding my bike at 4am. Trying to convince them I wasn't a burglar took some doing. And, standing at a bus stop with my friend (who admittedly stuck two fingers up at a group of them), their reaction was swift, brutal and manipulative. I know they were probably working "to targets" and saw an easy conviction to up their numbers but what happened that night isn't ever going to leave me. They goaded him into hitting a female police officer (which he had no intention of doing, and didn't). They isolated me so that I couldn't attest to what they were doing. They threw him into the van causing multiple injuries. And when he was released from the cells the next day, they wouldn't look him in the eye.
Upshot, though, is that they really are doing a difficult job that few of us understand. And sometimes they have to act in a way that seems to be overstepping the mark. Some are in the force for the wrong reasons, but most are just doing what they have to do. And some, like the guy I first dealt with, are going way beyond what is expected.
Common misperception, there is no 'off the record' with cops. I know what you are saying here, and it's not exactly the same thing I'm talking about, but I like to warn people to be wary of cops so I'm jumping on the chance here!! : )
Cops use that 'off the record' phrase as a trick. When they are interviewing a person, suspect or not, they will commonly pretend they are recording the conversation. Then, they stop the recorder or stop writing and put away their pad of paper (for effect only, the recorder isn't what's recording you, there's a video camrea system in any police station...and if they're just writing, they'll listen to what you say and write it down right after you say it), and say "OK, just level with me, off the record. What really happened?" IT'S A TRICK!! It's 100% of the time, absolutely, positively a TRICK to get you to say soemthing you might be reluctant to say otherwise. With cops, EVERYTHING you say to them WILL be used AGAINST you. NOT for you. Against you. EVERYTHING you say is on the record. Remember that!!
Don't ever talk to a cop without a lawyer. Ever. Even if you are not guilty...especially if you are not guilty. Don't waive your right to counsel!! EVER!!
Yes, I've got a few tickets and been arrested for something more serious once.
Do you know why a cop asks you "Do you know why I stopped you?" He's not asking to help you out. He asks that for one reason and one reason only-to garner a confession so the ticket sticks. Because MOST people don't know this, and they think he's trying to be nice or helpful or looking out for you, but he's looking out for him. If you answer, even partially honestly, he's got ya. You are on record confessing to a crime, which he WILL use against you in court. He's all friendly and nice when he's writing that ticket, but wait till you face him in court and he's testifying against you. He won't mention that you were nice, polite and cooperative. He will just mention that you confessed to a crime. Imagine how that is with more serious crimes.
ALL defense lawyers will tell you that the worst thing their client did was talk to the police without counsel.
No lawyer OR cop would tell you that it's a good idea to talk to cops without counsel!! I mean, the cops want you to think it's OK but if you asked them honestly if it's a good idea, NONE will say it is. They like easy convictions and that's how they get over 90% of convictions, is by people talking to cops without counsel. Even people who are innocent, or people who didn't commit this particular crime but involve themselves somehow to some degree this or another crime. If you make a mistake and say you were 'here' or 'there' at 5:00 and you were wrong abou tthe time, they will use that against you. They will paint you to be a liar in court and burn your ass. This is how they get innocent people convicted or involved somehow in a crime.
Oh, and just to add, you should ALWAYS refuse a police search. Never consent! They may just leave and not bother with getting a warrant, but if they don't, make them do their job, get a warrant, and then search. If you refuse a search and they do it anyway, NOTHING they find can be used as evidence against you. Even if they found 10 kilos of crack, too bad. They may even be refused a warrant, if they don't have enough reason. It always pays to refuse a search.
If you consent, then they're GOING to search. If you say NO, there's a good chance they won't, or they may do it illegaly thus screwing themselves.
This was actually really informative, thank you. I haven't encountered this yet, but in the future I'll definitely be more reserved if I'm on the receiving end of a ticket or even something more serious.
People are easily manipulated and it seems cops play them like a fiddle. Or try to.
Look at it this way...have you ever know a cop, who has been accused of a crime, to consent to a search, make any statement or talk to cops without a lawyer present? Nope. So if cops won't even do it, why the hell would you?
There's been, unfortunately, a few cops here in my small area that have been accused of some pretty serious crimes. None of them was without a lawyer or made a statement from day 1 of the investigation. Cuz they know the realness!
Please do!! These are your most basic but most important of Constitutional rights. It's very important to flex your rights any chance you get. Not because you're doing something wrong necessarily but to not use your rights to force the police to comply with the laws if nothing else. They're not used to people using these rights, and they take advantage of that sooooo much. Cops need to know their limits and respect your (and everyone's) rights, as it is now they don't respect our rights because people hardly ever invoke them. So police are on a power trip, and that's bad for everyone.
A lot of people feel like if they refuse a search, or ask for a lawyer, that it makes them 'look' guilty. Well, who cares what it looks like. You'll be much better off legally to use those rights. It may 'look' bad to other people, but to cops, it doesn't make a difference, they can't convict you on opinion, and what they thing of a person who refuses a search or lawyers up is, "that guy is smart, crap". Not "that guy is guilty".
'Cops' is such a broad category that it's impossible to make a blanket statement for all of them. I do, however, enjoy NWA's 'Fuck the Police'.
I think they are sexy!!! I love a man with a uniform, especially if he is carrying a gun!!!!
You'll get this with any profession, but I think it's worse with the police, because of the role they have in society.
There was another poll about this a while ago. I said:
"The police are not evil, they are just dangerous. I don't hate them any more than I would hate a rabid bear, but I avoid them just as much. There are no "good cops" and "bad cops", just people with weapons, uniforms, and badges that have been told that they have something called "authority". A very, very hazardous situation."
I do not feel any differently now.
When I was younger and I worked late nights a cop pulled me over for a busted taillight which mysteriously happened while I was at work. The cop pulls me over as I am leaving and decides to search my car because he sees a can of green tea that looks like beer. I did not agree to this . He ends up locking the keys in the car with it started and leaving me stranded there.lucky me the guys at the quick stop across the street saw the whole thing and helped me out.
not a fan of most cops.Whenever I called them when I was being abused years ago by my ex they were not helpful at all. They kind of made fun of me and made the situation worse.
Some are good, others are ASSHOLES.
I think it is funny how some people don't realize, cops are people. There are good and bad in EVERYONE.
And, everyone, even a cop is capable of having a "bad day" or be "off their game".
Unfortunately, they carry and a highly trained in the use of deadly weapons.
But, where would we be without them? You'd have dumb-shits like "beyond_beautiful" running the asylum! Fuck, that would be bad!
I mean, did you read what he/she had to say??? They kept fucking with them because of headlights....well, gee, ever think of making sure both are working, and LEGAL??? I mean, WTF....ever drive in front, or have someone coming at you with a headlight out, or, worse, lights that are too bright and glaring??? DUH....you are BLINDING other drivers, OR, worse, they can't SEE YOU. Sheesh, the cops want to make the streets safe, that is THEIR job...they don't want to scrape you and some innocent person off the street when you cause a bad crash! That is some gross shit cops have to take care of.
Then, he/she expects me to believe they hauled his/her boyfriend off to the station because he was warming up the car??? I guarantee he was either doing something or said something to the cop when he/she asked him what he was doing....I can hear it now...."None of yo fukin BUSINESS, motha fuka!!!" Ya, that's how you want to talk to a cop....if you want to go to jail.
They deserve to be fucked with, you ask me. And, I got news for them, it doesn't matter where you live, Chicago or Redneckville, cops will fuck with you if you are a dumb-ass.
Now, that doesn't give cops the right to shoot unarmed people 8 times in the back. But, the cop who did that was a psycho...ready to snap. It is sad for his victim and his family, and, although it won't bring him back, that family deserves millions in retribution. Now, imagine what the fuck that cop will be in store for when he gets locked up. You talk about getting your ass raped!!!!
I was born in Chicago but moved to Tn. when I was 10. I never encountered moments with the police, except getting a ticket for head lights. Since I moved back to Chicago, the police just like to fuck with people for no reason. Like the mess with my boyfriend and he is definitely no criminal, but it's like they stop him for no reason just to bring his spirit down. He is of Puerto Rican decent and black. Two incidents when it was cold: every morning except the weekends he had to move his car by 7 a.m because of parking restrictions at certain times. Well it was 7:10 and he was letting the car warm up because it was colder out side so the police get behind him and started fucking ith him for no reason and took him to the police station. They made him walk back home and it started raining so he got sick. WHAT THE FUCK DID HE DO TO MAKE THEM TAKE HIM TOO THE POLICE STATION, PARKED AFTER TEN MINUTES BECAUSE YOUR LETTING YOUR CAR WARM UP!! "(FUCK THE POLICE)" Well I am Mainly Italian and Black and I feel it is because the color of our skin. It was cold as hell outside and I was driving with my boyfriend. We made a left turn and u know the police start going slower and end up behind u creeping and shit, well they pulled us over in the cold. And MAY I REMIND U ALL OF THE WINDOWS WERE CLOSED IT WAS TOO COLD. WHEN THEY CAME UP TO MY WINDOW I OPENED IT, THEY TOLD US TO GET OUT N SHIT. I ADMIT I WAS DRIVING WITH NO LICENSE, BUT THIS BITCH AS COP LIES ON ME AND SAYS I THREW SOMETHING OUT THE WINDOW, HE GOT ME ON CAMERA. BITCH WHERE THE PROOF AT, THAT PUNK HAD NONE. POLICE ARE PUSSY DUMMIES AND PLAIN RIGHT OUT IGNORANT IN THE CHI. I LOST ALL MY RESPECT FOR THE POLICE SERIOUSLY THERE ARE NO POLICE MEN THAT DESERVE THERE JOB. THESE ARE NOT THE ONLY ENCOUNTERS WE'VE HAD TOGETHER AND WHEN HE'S BEEN ALONE. sad to say but FUCK THE BITCH ASS POLICE! muAH
I like real cops that solve murders and save people, not the dicks that pull you over for no good reason and give you a ticket just to make their quota.
Basically, like all human beings, there are good and bad cops. There are good and bad people regardless of occupation.
Its a generic question that a generic answer cant be given for. Cops are a broad cross section of society, some are good, some are bad, and some are really bad.
Once someone is given authority over other's its almost a certainty that they will use it to the utmost extent that they can, with many crossing the line and abusing it, its human nature to enjoy having power, exercising it, or craving it.
Some join to actually do the job and help people, most dont care one bit about that and enjoy the power of the position and the ability to carry a gun around.
One thing for sure is that just about every cop is full of shit and a hypocrite, and I present this as evidence. Every time an off duty cop is pulled over by another cop they flash a badge and get out of a ticket, sometimes for serious offense's, like DUI. All under the guise of "professional courtesy". Now the law is written as something all of us have to follow, not the ones who enforce it being exempt from it. Holding others to double standards that you yourself arent held to is the basic definition of hypocrisy.
@Gena45 I agree. Policemen and policewomen generally do get the short end of the stick when it comes to reputation. It is unfortunate that some members of law enforcement take advantage of their executive assigned power, but that is the way of the world with any type of position that requires respect and authority from others. From my experience, as a caucasian male, I find the police very friendly and helpful and protective of my community. Because I can only speak from my own perspective, I will refrain from hyperbolic comments, but for the most part, I've had a positive experience with law enforcement.
I like the comments that wigsplitz and Rufus made. I think that on a personal level some cops are good people and some are royal assholes BUT they have a job to do, and most take their job very seriously. I do my best to keep my life from intersecting with theirs.
John mclane was a cop so anyone who makes you want to walk around in a dirty vest smoking has my vote.
to me they're civilians with a badge and a gun most being in no good physical shape and bad judgment, I've always thought that the law should be mandated by the military and not donut munching 40 year old and balding cowards that use their uniform and their car to break the law. I dont trust any of them and hate their pathetic ego, their intimidation tactics are the equivalent of the bully with his friends picking on the outnumbered and the grapples that they are taught are equally terrible.
I have no respect to these cowards I protect my self from anybody wanting to do me wrong immediately and get questioned instead of waiting 20 minutes for a patrol car to buzz on by. Ugh and why does it seem that these cops are as badley mismatched as Fat albert and his crew
Haha try being a real man and join the military with men and women that have to respond to threats and arent given the choice to call in sick like these skidmarks.
Hmm...cops. Very mixed feelings of them at the moment. I'm more annoyed with those giving the orders than the person standing there in uniform. Who do they answer to? And who does that person answer to? And taunting them isn't helpful. Why is it I keep finding myself standing next to someone who feels the need to belittle and degrade a man in full riot gear with a plethora of weapons. They tend to spit when they speak and that's just gross.
I was always leery of them, until I lived with one and he was one of the biggest dirt-bags I've ever met.
There are constantly articles/videos in the news of them using excessive force. It's frightening that they let so many psychos become cops. Obviously, something is wrong with their screening programme. Plus, when they do "accidentally" beat someone to death, they don't go to jail or lose their jobs, they just get suspended without pay.
As afraid of them as I am, I still feel glad that there is someone out there trying to create some order in the community, even if they can't be trusted.
The guys and gals working the city streets are the best. Barney Fife on steroids is another story. Put some of the cops in suburban towns on the overnight in a ghetto and they'd be asking to code off to go home and change the pants they just messed themselves in.
I know some do abuse their privilege. Some really just don;t care about people at all, they just care about themselves. But some on the other hand, are really doing a great job of protecting us, and are great people in general. Overall, I think cops get a bad rep.
I love them. they are there to protect us. dominate us. frisk us when we are concealing. bind us when we are out of control. and punish us when are being bad.
Bad boys bad boys, whatcha gunna do? Whatcha gunna do when they come for you?
Some are fucking assholes who abuse their authority
Some are brave and have great hearts
Its like gambling..you might have a lucky shot when calling on them for help.
