Do you like a poster but dislike their comments....vice versa?

Is there a poster that you are friends with or just like a lot, but you tend to dislike their posts? Your dislike could be because you don't find their jokes funny, the subject matter they talk about, their facts, their experience, etc. Not that you'd be inclined to necessarily thumbs-down their comments, but you just find yourself saying...uggh, what an idiot, but I still like ya.

OR...Is there a poster whose comments are usually good, funny, helpful, or likable but you can't stand the poster as a person?

I like a poster but tend to not like their comments often. 7

It's usually I don't like the person, but like their posts. Then I have this internal struggle with myself...

'if I thumbs up their comments, would that mean that I actually like them?'

'If I do thumbs them up, that would mean that I'm supporting them.'

'But... but I don't like them, why am I supporting them?'

    'Are they secretly the president?'

    'OMG....'

'Why am I talking to myself?'

    UGHHHH.

I make good comments that tend to be similar. I often am on the can and just say how the body feels

You should thumbs up this comment because it somehow changed your life upon reading it.

      Happy I could help.

Well, usually I like the person because I like their posts. Although I understand that not everyone is going to have an opinion that I agree with 100% of the time but I appreciate thoughtful, helpful and funny comments in general.

I don't give a shit who you are, if you say something I like or agree with... then that's that. Judge the post, not the poster. Really not a fan of this username-based culture. You just end up with cliques and bias towards or against certain people. Sometimes a person's comment will be disregarded just because that particular person said it, even if the post itself is actually quite insightful/amusing/whatever. Then you'll get groups of people just discussing each other which really should be done privately instead of clogging the main site.

It's the words that should be judged, not the person saying them.

If I generally don't like a person's comments, then I generally don't like that person either.

  • To me saying you like someone's posts but not the poster is like saying you like river water but not it's source.

One naturally flows from the other. If the source is poisoned then so are its channels.

Sometimes I take people's posts with a grain of salt, especially if it's somebody who's said some deeply problematic shit. I try not to let past posts dictate what I think of newer ones, but if I remember a post somebody made that makes a later post really hypocritical or something, I will side eye the ever living shit out of them.

I'm more interested in the comment than the poster, so I don't dislike anyone here.

Urgh, I deleted my comment because I thought it didn't make sense, then reread it in my mind and realised it did but it's already gone. I'm good at this, aren't I? :(

Yes, just about and in rare cases. If I disliked a comment so much I thumb-downeded it I probably wouldn't really like that poster, but sometimes I can keep liking a poster I disagree with. It's difficult though, because their posts are the only window we get into their lives, and if you think, "wow, what a terrible window" then... you won't open the... door...? (extended metaphor fail)

It's unfair to judge people on that one window, but it's the only window we get in most cases so we can only like or dislike each others personalities based on that.

EDIT: I couldn't find a poster likeable if I didn't like the persona of their comments. I could find a poster likeable if they posted comments I disagree with but did it in an intelligent or non-arrogant or tentative or informative way.

RE-EDIT: I like people for the quality of their personalities, not their opinions. I like comments for the quality of their commentary, not their author. This last bit was the important part.

I think there are people who don't do themselves justice with their posts or show the best of themselves, but that's just life.

As for the other way around (liking the posts but not the person), I can't think of any examples. If I like the posts, I like the person, because the posts are an extension of them.

Logicians might spot a disparity in the above two statements but, if you want to point it out, be aware that I've already noticed it and already have an answer for it. :P

Ooh, is it that people's posts might make them seem nicer than they are? If somebody can make disproportionately unflattering posts, surely people can make disproportionately flattering posts, too. Or is it that posts where people act like assholes are also an extension of them, and are no less indicative of personality than posts where people act kind?

The second one was bang on. The logical problem was that I said posts are an extension of a person and, when posts are good, I judge the person well, and so when posts are bad, I should judge them harshly.

But then if I post a grumpy, moany post (as I often do), am I only that person? Am I a bad person temporarily until I post something better? I don't think I'm a bad person but I do write bad posts.

Sometimes. I pretty much like everyone, but a few people have made at least one comment I didn't like.
