Do you lick the plate clean?

Whenever I finish any dish, I lick the bowl/plate/etc clean. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing left on the plate to wash off should be saliva. I don't understand why people just leave the last tiny fraction of their food sitting around.

I actually get annoyed if I'm eating something out of a badly-shaped container, such as yogurt, and I can't get my tongue in to lick the rest out. It's so wasteful.

How about you? Do you lick the plate, or are you just too good for those last few crumbs?

Of course not, I love wasting food 5

I lick other peoples plates and they don't have to be finished eating either

Come to think of it, I don't even have to know them. It happens alot in restaurants.

I don't lick my plate, but not because it has anything to do with wasting food or not; it's a rude habit, and slightly gross, in my opinion. Besides, there's nothing on my plate to lick up except for a little sauce, maybe...

And now I just wonder what everyone is eating to where there is food left to lick off.

    • I'm not talking about doing it in public, though I wish I was. How is it gross?

I can't think of a food or dish where there isn't anything left to lick off.

My reasons haven't much to do with what Holzman_67 said - well, I did say "slightly gross". I find it slightly gross because saliva is gross to me.

Also, I wasn't thinking about licking the plate in public, either. But I do eat in front of my family.

        • But it's in your mouth...
I do it with my family all the time. I wasn't raised to do it, I'm the only one in my family that does it. My family doesn't have a problem with it.

          @Holzman_67
Manners and etiquette don't really apply here unless it's getting in the way or grossing out the other diners. Worrying about something being "animalistic" isn't a real reason not to do it. Otherwise, you're one of those people that eats finger-foods with a knife and fork.

I'm well aware that it's in my mouth, but the whole idea of spreading it across a plate and licking it back into my mouth is slightly gross to me. It's not the same as eating from chopsticks, or a fork or spoon. i'm having difficulties with finding a way to explain why I find it slightly gross, but I just know I do. But as I said before, the food I eat leaves nothing to be licked up save for a little bit of sauce, maybe.

I don't really do that, but as long as you're not doing it while sitting with a table full of people, then there's nothing wrong with it.

    Unless it's ice cream.

Ice cream always has an exception.

Hmm do you mean with liquid food such as soup? I suppose you do as you can get everything else up with a fork knife or spoon otherwise.
So if it was soup, the only instances I would lick it clean is if I'm eating by myself and even then I would rarely do it.
Around others I think it's bad table etiquette. Call me pompous but it was just the way I was raised.

"Around others I think it's bad table etiquette. Call me pompous but it was just the way I was raised. "

You described this really well; I'm the same.

OP, I do this sometimes. Just not around others for fear of being judged badly. It's just not something that's 'proper' to do around others in public.

      • I'm not talking about in public, though I wish I was. I don't really think it's bad etiquette since it signals to the chef that you really liked the food.

Others tend to judge you for it, though, so blah.

And I mean with any food, doesn't have to be soup.
