Do you know the difference between cloth, clothe, and clothes?

People are often calling each other out on their spelling and grammar mistakes but I've never seen anyone say a word about this one and it gets on my nerves. This is an enlightenment poll.

Cloth, Clothe, Clothes mean respectively:

Fabric, Put items of clothing on, Garments 36
There's only one correct answer and this is not it. 4
I did not know but I will fucking use it properly from now on, sir! 3

I think almost everyone whose age is in two figures knows the difference, but the reason they sometimes spell it wrong is to do with muscle memory. All three words start with the same 5 letters, so it's easy to type those letters and then your fingers automatically hit [space] when you wanted to hit "e" or "es" because of muscle memory. Sometimes people don't notice their mistake (because all the words are real words, which means spellcheck won't notice a mistake) or they just don't care and presume (correctly) that everyone can work out what they meant.

I like the perspective you took on this one, I wouldn't have thought of that.

I wonder if people do this often in writing or not?

Thanks :) I bet we do all the time - I do, anyway. I only do it when I have to write very quickly (I presume it's because my brain is thinking ahead to the next word, not thinking about the word I'm actually on) like in a timed essay. It tends to happen with words of fairly similar length which start with the same 4-or-more letters, but have different meanings. "Breath" and "breathe" are other ones I get wrong sometimes. "Both" and "bother" at the two I most often get mixed up in that situation, though. Even typing that sentence I typed "bothe" before I corrected myself, and "bothe" isn't even a real word :P The extra "e" always creeps on even if I'm trying to concentrate on *not* writing it :P

          You are welcome!

I'm not sure if I do it or not, but I don't write quickly. I don't think very quickly either sometimes. Lol. Next time I write anything extensive I'll try to remember to take notice if I do this or not.

I do that with the typing quite often though. I think a good one would be the words "there," "their," and "they're." I often have to go back and correct myself from typing one to make sure it's used in the proper context.

"Clothe" is not one that I would use very often.

I would probably say 'get dressed' or something along those lines.

One is fabric and one is something you wear and one is the act. So cloth is simply material and Clothes is something you put on. Clothe is to put clothes on as in "I clothe myself". Did I get it right? Also how are we suppose to answer your poll when the words have different meanings?
