Just a weird, random question, but I'm curious. People say the statistics are quite high, but I'm not sure. I've only ever known two people that have cut or harmed themselves in any way. But what about you guys, do you know any? Is this problem really all that common?

Yeah I cut my fingernails and hair everyone does. What the actual fuck are you talking about.
The idea in theory is that when your in an upset frame of mind, you distract yourself from thinking about it -pain is the thing that distracts you. It can even be addictive.
yeah my best friend uses to cut herself coz she for bullied (LOADS you have no idea!!) physically and that's how she became anorexic and I am helping her through all her problems so I am glad. :) i dont think i would try cutting myself though :/ xx <3
I would cut myself just to see how it feels. If it's okay, then I will do it whenever I'm angry or depressed. Yes, I know people that cut themselves.
Yeah, i think it does actually, coz your harming yourself. Well no actually, i think it would depend on why you punched the wall. Although i have to admit, I'm really surprised at how many people have done this (harmed themselves) even if it's not so extreme. It's really quite sad.
A good friend of mine did for a while. As far as I know she has stopped, which is good to hear. I've thought about doing it, but I don't like the look of scars nor do I see it as a way to relieve my problems.
I knew someone from work, someone I met online and I did it for a month myself. I did it out of curiosity and because I was going mad. (hearing voices) Then it turned into something I did to feel good/relieve stress.
I used to be a cutter, no one knew about it though because i kept it hidden. I've known many people that did it as well, but i think most like to keep it a secret because of shame. If people ask me about my scars now i think up the lamest reasons i can ;p i think it's rude for them to ask when they obviously know and just want me to say it for some reason.
I know someone, me. I used to cut and have visible embarrassing scars on my left hand. I only did it a few times because of my fear of catching diseasea from sharp objects, of course I used new razors that I used alone but since then I've been afraid of needles not because of the pain because I have a high threshold for pain but because I fear of catching diseases from sharp objects.
I have a friend who cuts and burns herself. I cut myself sometimes too but only when I'm REALLY upset and I don't do nothing too stupid, I just cut a little.
I have cutting scars up both legs and my upper arms; they're mostly in places people can't see them, but unfortunately it means that if I wear shorts or short-sleeve t-shirts they're on display. They look horrible and make me feel like an idiot for doing it in the first place, not to mention the fact that they just remind me of the bad times. Worse than that though, I have a very obvious cigarette burn on my forearm (which is always visible) and a couple on my belly and shoulders (making it awkward to take my shirt off). I usually try and pass it off as a birth mark, but I think it still weirds people out :/ !
I cut myself up in one incident. It didn't make me feel any better, so I never did it again. I invented an elaborate story involving a pedestal fan accident to cover it up, surprisingly everyone bought it :).
Really I just went for alcohol whenever I felt depressed after that because it actually made me feel better.
A couple of my friends definitely have, and it's always possible others have but I've been unaware. Neither of them do anymore, I think.
If you're interested any further, one was a girl and one was a guy. The guy only did it for a short period of time, then the school found out and made him go to a handful of therapy sessions and he got it under control. The girl had a more long-term problem with cutting and was much more secretive about it (she'd wear these long gloves up to her elbows to hide the cuts, but they made it even more obvious she was hiding something), but I think having a boyfriend helped her put a stop to it.
Yes i knew people that did this some are still here some are not so lucky.
Some people can turn it around others don't. I feel like i have failed them.
I have known a few girls and one guy as well. Some worse than others. My ex looks like she had her arm caught in a lawn mower. It is pretty sad.
