Do you have malt liquor outside of the us?

Pretty self-explanitory....is malt liquor popular in your country as it is here in the US? Products like 40 ounces of Olde English, Colt 45, tall-cans (24 oz) of Tilt or 4 loko? Do you even have 40-oz beers in other countries?

Malt liquor is basically a high-alcohol content beer or flavored beverage (usually like 10-12% alcohol, whereas most regualr beer is from 3-6% alcohol). It's higher alcohol content is typically achieved by adding sugars or corn to the fermenting process.

There's a Belgian beer that is almost the strength of vodka, but the drink you're talking about we don't have here in England (that I know of). There are "Super" lagers of strengths from 9%-12%, fortified wine (18%-22%) like the flavoured "Mad Dog 20/20" or "Thunderbird" but these are generally the preserve of tramps as they give the largest alcohol versus price ratio.

When I think of malt liquor, I generally imagine a single malt Scotch whisky.

  • When I was at the liquor store, I noticed a hobo buying some, so I asked him what it tasted like. It looked like watered down beer. He said it tastes like beer, but it's way cheaper and has more alcohol.

A few minutes later, when I was in the parking lot, he offered me the first sip. It did taste like beer, only less flavor and more of a tinny taste.

I go with Dappled on my answer .. a Malt Liquor is normally a whisky or classed as a spirit. The fortified 'beer' you mention is certainly not a popular thing in any part of the US I visited, I even had a problem finding cider..which in most countries is alcoholic. You guys call ordinary apple juice cider.
Like dapple says, only alcoholics and people who live on the street would be buying big bottles of such strong stuff.
Beer and lager is served in pint glasses, so who would want to drink a pint of such strength?
Is this hooch available in all states and what sort of people drink it?
sounds pretty much like rough-gut to me.
I owned a pub and would never serve a beer of that strength. Not even to my regulars who drank 16 pints of 5% every day.

Yeah it's a rarity to come across Malt liquor here - from what I gathered you can get them in specialist alcohol shops or some duty free shops - these type of stores usually cater to visitors.

It only exists in America - its actually brewed from fermented dog fur that has been soaked in urine. It also makes you a fucktard ! I would suggest injecting it with heroin !
