Do you hate people with bad grammar?

I've always been a grammar nazi and it absolutely kills me when people butcher the English language. What do you all think?

God, yes! It's like a cheese grater to my ears. 109

I thought "poor" grammar was the correct way to word it. *shrugs*

Bad grammar can be really useful online. When people consistently make the same mistakes, they're still identifiable when making anonymous comments. People have emailed me pretending to be someone else with better grammar/spelling. How did they not think I would notice?

Now THAT's an interesting bonus to bad grammar! I can only imagine that they were very upset when you recognized them.

      >:-)

Much as I'd have liked to confront him, he never found out that I knew. He was trying to manipulate a situation to ruin a mutual female friend's life. I had an advantage in knowing who he was, and him not knowing I knew. It's amazing what people will say when they think they're saying it anonymously.

It's also amazing that he thought Machiavellian was spelled Makavelian (presumably because of Tupac) but that he couldn't even spell this. He went with Makuvalian. It took me five minutes to work out what the hell he meant. I thought he was referring to a resident of some Pacific island called Makuval (which looked enough like Tuvalu to convince me it was possible).

        Some people, eh?

It's ridiculous how, these days, good grammar is nonexistent. It's like everyone has become more lenient and blame it on technology; they don't even teach grammar in school anymore. I always feel a need to help those with bad grammar; I'm my girlfriend's personal English teacher, haha.

I agree with what someone said about bad grammar having its place, like on the internet or to be casual. It's also best to ignore old useless rules of grammar that no one cares about anymore and never actually mattered (like "who" vs. "whom" for example).

On the other hand, writing a formal paper or even a business email using bad grammar makes you look like a moron.

(that last sentence is written using bad grammar since it should be "makes ONE look like a moron".)

Sadly, you are very right indeed.

A few years ago I met a 5th grade teacher in a group I was in and she told us about how horrible the school system had become. Apparently the school wasn't teaching spelling anymore so she was having to teach students who didn't even know how to spell common words.

It was rather depressing really. These children were going to be at a severe disadvantage unless they started learning.

People don't look at resumes when you have spelling errors. They will think the applicant is stupid, uneducated, or just too lazy. Jobs are competitive these days - the people who don't care are not the ones who will be getting hired.

I don't hate them. It can get annoying sometimes, and I'll correct them if I know they don't mind, but that doesn't translate into 'hating' anyone. That's snobbish and irrational, and honestly, if you're that incensed by poor grammar, you don't have much business being on the internet.

I'm offended when people insulting you online spell swear words wrong. It's not insulting, anymore.... (yes, I contradicted myself on purpose)>

For me, I personally don't care about other people's grammar. I have a few friends that have bad spelling, but I just ignore it. I used to joke around with them and spell it right for them, lol.

I hate it when people speak while using bad grammar. I don't blame people for hanging around bad grammar if they want to, its their business.

I am not English and i have been speaking it for 7 years. I was in class and our teacher asked us to underline all the verbs in the text. Of course i was underlining the verb To Be. AALL the english kids we laughing and saying how stupid i was that To Be isnt a verb. How fucking annoying and DUMB. My humanities teacher came to ask me how to spell CREATION because she had forgotten, I was in year 9. We were deciding how we were gonna base a scenario for improv in drama, they suggested hairdressers i said that idea was very vulgar and boring. They said how can an idea be VULGAR when it means disgusting. Well it doesnt mean that, it means lack of taste, manners, something ordinary. Well even the teacher agreed it meant disgusting. I hate IGNORANCE!

Not at all. If I cannot understand what they are saying, I am willing to ask them what they mean. No use cursing other people's limitations. I don't have time for it.

  • wow that's nice. ^^ to OP what about if they cant help it, the effort too great or brain damage or crappy vocal skills or crippled hands ....the list goes on. to correct is to help tho.do you want others to put in as much effort as you yourself does? what if they have other interests other skills? its hard to know

      Not exactly.

I hate when people use lazy spelling and ignore the built-in spell check functions.

As for "crippled hands" ... That's why there's other ways to type. There's voice-to-text translators as well as other devices you can use. Stephen Hawking writes perfectly fine even without the use of his hands.

Lastly, "Other interests"? That's nowhere near any kind of legitimate excuse for being lazy with spelling. That's just making up excuses.

If someone has "other interests" than learning how to spell common words in their native language, then they should understand when no one else has any "interest" in agreeing with them or caring what they say.
