Do you hate it when someone tells you something is impossible to do?

I absolutely HATE it when people tell me that it is impossible for me to accomplish something, even if the chances are slim. I just refuse to accept that I can't do something just because a person can't stomach an idea and have some faith in it. What do you guys think?

I can't stand that either 36
I don't really mind it 11
It depends. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong 33

But some things are unarguably impossible. For example:

    - It is impossible for me to perform telekinesis to tidy me bedroom.

    - It is impossible for me to lift my whole house with one hand and balance it, unsupported, on my nose.

    - It is impossible to chew your way out of a high security jail cell with 2 meter thick steel walls, at room temperature, in under 5 minutes with your bare teeth.

    - It is impossible for me to instantly turn into a pink, Godzilla-sized badger utilising the the power of thought alone.

These things are beyond the realms of physical ability and possibility; they ARE impossible.

    • Well, of course if something is completely out of my power then I'll accept it, but if it isn't then I refuse to.

Of course THAT is reasonable then. Just important to know the limits of yourself.

Lots of things are impossible, but don't ever blur the line between impossible and improbable. That's how I see it.

      I enjoyed the 4th example :)

      1) If "telekinesis" is defined as manipulating objects from afar, all you need is to tell your mom to do it. That is, by definition, tidying your room by the power of your mind.

      2) Outer space. You said "unsupported", so it'd be unfair to ask for the support of the ground beneath you anyway.

      3) Quantum mechanics suggests that there's only a minuscule probability of that occurring, not impossible. This one's kind of a stretch.

      4) If you convince everyone, including yourself, that it is true, couldn't it be said to be true by the "power of thought"?

        1) Technically. At a push. Without help and without moving, it is impossible.

        2) Except I don't live in outer space. Have fun transporting my house there...

        3) True.

        4) Not really, because it still wouldn't be true. If a liar convinces the world he is telling the truth then he is still a liar, just it doesn't matter if he is a liar or not.

Well, if you actually accept my third explanation (which is surprising, I thought that was the weakest one), then that basically allows for anything else. Literally nothing is impossible - some things are just incredibly improbable. And in the fourth, (besides assuming there is such thing as inarguable objective truth), if you accept the implications of quantum mechanics, the double-slit experiment implies that reality is actually dependent on perception.

As for number two, you DO live in outer space. You just have a massive celestial body right nearby, which I pointed out would could as "support".

It is still not possible within the grounds of reasonable probability. Maybe not impossible after all, though. I think you are too clever for me :P

However, I would think of outer space as a space outside an atmosphere, but I don't know if there is a scientific definition that could prove me wrong. On Earth we have several atmospheres, so I wouldn't count the Earth as part of outer space by my definition of it.

Nothing is impossible... Except female rights... (I apologize... I am just in a "trolling" mood today as well as being a new user I find I should get some attention on me atm.)

Yea I can't stand that..people tell me that it will be impossible for someone like me to chase my dream to be a musician or a makeup artist, or to even marry my boyfriend in England. I say, man up and have a bit of faith!

Usually, when someone says something is impossible, they don't mean it in the literal sense.

  • ...Oviously this guy is meaning things that can be accomplished but are hard to do, obviously not things that are litrally impossible.

  • Yea I hate it too, but sometimes I just use it to motivate myself to prove them wrong. If I fail, I at least know the truth by experience not by what people told me.

Personally, I like when people think things are impossible. I think it's necessary, and good, for many reasons.

So... would you say that it's impossible for you to like it when someone tells you something is impossible?

Sometimes it's good to listen to them, because they're usually telling you this for your own good:)

However, I can see what you mean.

  • Same. I smoked for three years and my mother and brothers mocked me saying that I couldn't give up even if I wanted to and that I was addicted. So, I said "Oh yeah?" and haven't smoked since. Pride > addiction.

it depends if they're right or not.

and if you're being honest with yourself on whether or not you can really do it
