On one occasion I gave the guy my socks, shirt, gloves, beanie, some money and, took him to a takeout and bought him dinner. This was Manchester, UK as winter was approaching so it was fucking cold. I reckon I probably made his day.

I don't, I wish I could say I do, but I live down town, and walk past the same people everyday. I've heard of girls being followed by homeless people, and they can stay outside your building. I've had some yell and follow me before... Sometimes I really wish I carried change on me, but living downtown I avoid using cash at all. When I'm back home in I sometimes give homeless people money when I'm in the car. But its just not safe to where I'm going to school now.

Fuck those bums...There are lots of government programs for them and most are drug addicts and drunks who'd rather beg than work...Im not a fool and I know the average beggar makes between 50 and 100 dollars daily in the right place(downtown, mall, subway, outside expensive places, etc) and if their own family wont shelter them or give them money then why would you??

@SCH-U450 i bet you tip your waiter a dollar and wonder why he gets mad huh?

all you people who are saying that they would just go buy booze, you are just trying to make excuses for why you don't give them money so you can feel better about not doing it, whether you realize it or admit it.

you should, if you have some spare change, give it to them. there is no way they can survive on booze alone so of course they are going to spend it on food.

i am not a bleeding heart, i wouldn't even call myself a kind person, but to pass someone in need on the street and act as thought they are any different than any other person in need is to treat them as less than human and it is to kill a little bit of your own humanity. if you consider yourself a part of civilization then it is your obligation to help out those people in any small way that you can, be it buying them a $1 cheeseburger or giving them the 37 cents in change rattling in your pocket.

      grow up children.

  • I really like the variety of responses to this poll. From my experience, whether I give them anything or not I'm bound to obsess about it later. I don't feel regret and I don't really feel good about myself either..I guess I just feel weird.

We don't have homeless people loitering about. The next town over, however, has a little community in the woods of homeless people. There's even a 'mayor' who's in charge. They get what they need through donations and stuff

When I have my own money (ie money I earned and not given to me by my parents) I usually throw in my spare change when I see them hangin around the stores. They're prolly just gonna buy drugs or booze with it but whatever I feel better.

I would buy them a hot drink if it was a cold day and had the money to spare. Whilst there are homeless charities housing the down-and-outs, many of these are infested with violent drug addicts and dealers, so many homeless people would rather risk it on the street and don't want any of that crap and I can't say I blame them.

After seeing dozens of undercover reports of "homeless" people and beggars getting change, then seeing them get into their car which is nicer than mine, then drive to a house bigger than mine, I don't ever do it.

If I see someone who has a sign that says "I just want food, no money" I have taken them to get food and see to it they aren't hungry. But the rest of them are frauds who don't really need help they are either lazy or con-artist.

I like to help those who tries in life. Bad things happen in life, I know. But there is no reason why a person has to stay homeless. Go out there and try to survive or die trying.

Every so often I'll give to one, but can't give to all. I'm in NYC. I do give monetary donations a few times a year to the nyc food pantry and to other charities (that actually don't have to do with homeless though).

i fart in their cup and then i say "there....dont you feel greedy with all that fart you asshole...you should give half of that shit back"...then i mock a fist fight and say that he assaulted me,and i gash my eyebrow open with a crushed soda can edge...then explain to the police officer i was high on pcp...and the fart story..where i then go to jail for 13 hours to sober up and 4 months later i get a check for $6,470 because the store was nice and lawsuits and magic and lawyers and stuff...where i then return to said store and give the same homeless man $20's...a pint of peppermint schnapps...a pack of cheap smokes...some decent pot...and a coupon for red lobsters but its only good on tuesday

The reason I don't give them money is that they are usually sitting there smoking and drinking. If you can afford ciggies and alcohol then you can afford food and warm clothes. Plus there are many places and organisations that the homeless can go for help in my city if they need it.

Begger kids are scary. They chase you when they see you carrying ice creams. It's ice cream, so dont blame them much.

Most of the time I walk by (especially since these days I don't tend to have any change on me).

A few times I've given them a sandwich, sat down and had a chat with them to see what's going on.

No matter how much I might give them, it's not enough to change their life, so if I have it, and feel like it, I will give one a few bucks, or 5, or 20.
I don't give it to them to change their life, I do it to make me feel good.

I won't give them money, but I offer to buy a full meal from nearby places. Whether they accept or not is their own choice.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • no i wouldn't give it to random ppl on the street for these reasons:
    1) You don't know if they're poor or just pretending to be poor.
    2) A lot of times they don't use it for food... they use it for drinks and drugs...
    3) They do have choices... they can have soup kitchens they can go to and shelter homes that have beds, so they don't have to stay out on the streets and they don't need the money, because they have places to go for food and shelter.
What we have always done since I was young was say at halloween we would give all the candy that wasn't given away to the trick or treaters and the candy we didn't like we would give to the soup kitchen. Or we would give our old clothes to salvation army... if I was to give money it would be to Haiti or Africa or something like that.

You shouldnt give them money as the majority of them would just buy drugs or alcohol. Instead give them food or clothes.

  • I never carry around spare change with me and even if I did, I wouldn't give it to them because most homeless people will buy drugs with it. I look at the apologetically though.

No. They are either scammers, alcoholic/addicts, or deadbeats. If they wanted a job or a home it's so easy to get one. Salvation army will hook anyone up with a temporary place to stay, job interviews, and first and last months rent once you find a job and a real place to stay.
