Do you get mad when a well-off relative gives crap gifts?

Most of us have at least one well-off relative...someone you KNOW has a good amount of money (not just a facade, they really do have $$). Does it make you mad inside when they give some cheap gift? I mean, yeah, it's their decision how to spend their money, but wtf? Do they think it's the early '50's or something when Cokes were a nickel and kids played with a box and a stick??

It's like, you're a millionaire Uncle Charlie, is a $25 gift really appropriate? Get with the times mister, I can't even drink away my Christmas depression on $25....

Yes, I admittedly get a little mad inside. Cheap bastard. 63
Kinda-sorta, but I feel bad for having that feeling. 36
No, whatever they give is OK with me. 16
I go into a rage and throw the cheap crap back at them. 5
Nah, more money left for me when they die.... 1

I know what you mean. I don't need their pathetic token gift but sometimes I do actually think it's just an insult. My mother in law has girls my age - yet gives me crap, so it's not as if she can't buy age appropriate gifts.

So, when I say, "Oh, you shouldn't have!" I really nean it. I usually leave her house and leave the 'gift' behind me OR give it back to her in a few months as a donation to her little charity sale.

    Who's the bigger bitch now?

  • Honestly I'm always grateful for whatever I'm given as a gift, even if its just socks. The only time it sucks is when like, you're all opening gifts together on xmas morning, maybe its you, your cousins, and your rich grandparents, and your cousins got new laptops and you got a $10 gift card to wal mart lol. Then its a little obvious.

my mother in law isn't rich but she has a new car, goes on 2 holidays a year and her house is pretty much paid off but she ALWAYS buys my kids cheap crap for birthdays and Christmas and it always goes in the bin, not because I am being a cow but because it always falls to bits the day after they have it :s I would be happier if she put some money in a card for them.

I never expect anything, that way I am never disappointed.

And if its £5 its still more than what I had before. I don't have any 'right' to someone else's money so why should I be offended? The fact that they have remembered my birthday/Christmas is a huge bonus.

I think I would go and write a $100 check, make a little make-shift christmas card or whatever out of plain white printer paper with crayons, and then explain how I was responsible for increasing their investment by 400% in the record time of only the few minutes we were interacting. Screw hedgefunds.

Nope...I never get them shyt so if they give me a crap gift I just sell it or give it away...either way its something for free so why are you mad..

  • It's the thought that counts. I may be a little dissapointed, but not mad at all.

Aww no, its the thought that counts :p

  • I think the thought put into giving a gift is far more important than the cost of the gift.

    • Yeah but what if the gift is cash?? Then shouldn't it be income-relative and at least adjust for inflation?? For Christ sake, why do I get the same birthday check of $25 that I got 30 years ago?? How does that make sense?

      • Sure, if you apply that sort of logic to a "gift", but you should NEVER have expectations when receiving a "gift" of any kind.

It is really bad manners (worse than the error of being a cheap gift-giver) to bitch about the lack of money put into gift and it makes you seem childish.

        • Yes, I know this, it's just a feeling, you know? You can't help what your basic, initial feelings are. It's not that I expect anything or am actually validly mad about it, it's just what goes through my head~~it's not what I'd think is logical or appropriate, so I have trouble understanding why it's the way it is. I just think, how did you arrive at this??

If its always been this, why do you expect more?

        • Because I personally wouldn't give the same $ to an infant as a teenager or a young adult, I don't understand it. I also don't understand not realizing that say $25 doesn't buy the same as it did in 1970. Whatever, it's their choice, I just don't get the line of thinking.

I don't think it is worth your energy to try and understand "why" they do this. Especially if it only causes frustration.

            • You are probably right, but it's my nature to try to understand everything possible, I can't help it!! :)
