Do you experiment on yourself medically?

How far do you go with DIY medicine? Do you run to the doctor if you have so much as a sniffle, or do you try to take on serious medical issues yourself (using veterinary medicine, DIY sutures, DIY dermatology & dentistry, etc)?

I mean actually TREATING yourself medically, not putting off treatment!!

I'd never even think to experiment medically. 26
I'd only do something very minor, but be very open to seeing a Dr. 14
I've done some simpler things, nothing outstanding or risky. 23
I try to do a lot, but am not good at it and make things worse. 3
I do a lot myself and I'm pretty good at it. 12
I do all my own medical care, from minor to extreme. 15
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

About 4 years ago I kept getting tonsilitus, one time i decided not to go and get any antibiotics from the doc and to just let my body deal with it, i havn't had it since.

DIY... I once had a swollen taste-bud. I don't know why or how it happened, but the little thing hurt like hell. I cut it off with the nail clippers. No more pain and a small dot of blood on my tongue. Problem solved. :)

It didn't ruin your sense of taste?

No because there are hundreds and hundreds more of them, it was only one angry little bud. It's not something I do all the time.

I don't actually get sick often. When I do, I take care of myself with home-treatments and medication

home treatments as in ... plenty of water or juice, tea if needed, rest.
medications as in ... cold or allergy meds as required.

I tend to want to go to doctors, but a lot of times I don't have a ride or my parents won't take me because it's too expensive. I only want to go to doctors for illnesses like infections or stuff like that, though.
When it comes to things like cuts and scrapes a dab of glue will do you fine.

I really want to do Acupuncture and Hijama, but it can be dangerous if you don't do it right.

I take herbs for my immune system:)

I'd always run straight to a doctor. In the US, I believe healthcare can be very expensive indeed, so if I lived there I might give DIY a chance for minor problems, but as UK citizens get healthcare here via taxes, I would always go straight to a doctor because I wouldn't be left out of pocket.

In the US, there's no free healthcare. Allot of people don't have insurance and those that do have to pay shitloads for it. You'd think that for all the money you'd pay, that insurance would pay for everything, but it doesn't.

So, most people can't go to the doctor even for serious issues. Then, the law discriminates against gay people and other groups. The system is seriously fucked!

I recently went to England and I had to go to the hospital. Even though I'm not a
citizen, they still didn't make me pay! That's how a government should be run. A place where they care about the interests of the people. You're lucky to be a Brit. I'm ashamed of america on so many levels. It's gotten to the point where I've decided to give up my citizenship.

I hear England is great especially London. It's fun to live in terrorist infested areas. Is shariah totally implemented there yet or only halfway?

that perhaps is why people here don't want taxed medical.

because when someone else pays the bill, people tend to over-use the system

Interesting theory. But I'd rather have an over-used system than an under-used one.

In an over-used system, people visit a doctor when they don't need it, and are turned away if their symptoms are so minor they don't need treatment. In an under-used system, people suffer or possibly die because they can't afford medical care.

The thing is... even turning them away costs money because you have to have someone paid to screen them.

and of course that's assuming the people who get turned away actually leave without trying to fight it

Not very much money though. It only takes 30 seconds to say to someone with a common cold that they should just go home and rest. If doctors were paid on a case-by-case basis it would be different, but they are instead paid by the hour, so actual cost in terms of wages doesn't really rise.

That is true, but for whatever reason this isn't really a major problem. Whenever this happens then staff can call the police, but it is normally only drunk "patients" that cause problems.

ah but still that's paid by taxes, the police.

although not all trouble-patients are drunks. don't forget the tweakers or whatever nicknames they go by... the ones who are masters at faking stuff just for the drugs
