Do you ever just look at the sun and wonder, wow it's a f-ing star!

You know, like that it's millions of kilometers (or miles) away from us, and you could fit like a million Earths inside it?

Like that one guy said, if you don't think space is cool, you don't understand it!

One time, in my Dove chocolate square wrapper, it said that I was star for which all evenings wait. I felt special.

It's disorienting to look up at the sky and realize that space is more massive than I will ever be able to imagine to scale.

Couldn't have said it better myself. It's really amazing to think about.

When I die I want my casket launched into space at a trajectory that avoids all planets/stars/obstacles and travels out of the milky way galaxy. You in?

Might be a bit tricky, but I'm planning it all out as we speak. I got dis.

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas, a gigantic nuclear furnace. Where hydrogen is built into helium at a temperature of millions of degrees.

I know what you mean and yes it's normal, I do the same, occasionally take a moment out of the day to stop and appreciate the things we take for granted and don't pay attention to for most of our lives, I see the sun every day but to actually ponder it is a different thing completely

I think of the thermonuclear chain H -> He -> C -> ... -> Fe, as well as the main sequence. Eight light minutes; adiabatic temperature gradient; alpha particle wind; junk like that.

  • And it's pretty fucking far as well: light goes around the Earth seven times in one second, and it takes almost eight and a half minutes for light to go from the Sun to the Earth!

    Daamn!

It's also amazing to think that in the original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves, he can fly so fast around the Earth that he can turn back time. But he can't fly fast enough to stop both missiles.

This is a brilliant link.. A true-scale plan of our solar system on one very wide page, with our moon scaled to one pixel.. Scroll right to set off out from the sun. It's amazing seeing the true proportions of things, in a way that could never be printed in a book or on one normal screenshot.
