Do you dislike the main characters of a tv show?

Is there a TV show whose protagonist, that you're supposed to like, you absolutely HATE instead? *NOT* that you hate the actor that plays the character, but the character themselves.

What TV show, which character(s) and why?

Sometimes. Usually it's a symptom of me not liking the show generally, like in the case of Two and a Half Men. Peter from Family Guy is another example; he's too much like Homer from The Simpsons except Homer was a loveable twat and Peter is just a twat.

I also dislike main characters who are obviously created to be "likeable" and writers pull every idiot trick in the book to try and make the viewer like them. It just feels so fake and contrived and automatically makes me hate them.

Humm..6thumb up, guess I am the only person who think Peter is more loveable than Homer

  • Meredith from Grey's Anatomy.

Ellen Pompeo is a horrible actress and Meredith is a horrible character. Luckily, I've since realized that Grey's Anatomy is an all-around horrible show. God, what was I thinking...

I hate naruto from naruto. I like gaara more. Even lee would have made a better main character.

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) from New Girl.

I actually really enjoy that show, but for her; lazy line delivery, two-dimensional and unlikeable. The other characters are great, especially Schmidt and Nick.

I wouldn't say I dislike him, but I've never really been a fan of Leonard on Big Bang Theory.

There's also Tara on True Blood...fuck her.

well my answer (the comment that disappeared) was Walter White from Breaking Bad. Because quite frankly, what is there to like about him? he is doing a highly immoral and illegal thing to make money and keeping it from his wife and kid. He is deceitful and conniving and his character frustrates the hell out of me. I know that his character must be like that to drive the plot and story forward, but I dislike him so greatly.

I know what you mean. I think the writers sought to tread relatively new ground by having a protagonist who had good intentions to begin with, but became progressively more corrupt as his power and wealth increased, until he becomes the primary antagonist. We watch this journey as an audience both willing him to overcome the obstacles he encounters yet losing faith in his morality, shocked by what he's become. What made him initially likeable has all but faded.

But that's what makes it so watchable. Will he fall from his throne of meth and money?

That's a good point and I agree with you, although I never liked his character to begin with but I see what you are saying. It was hard going for me to watch, I lost interest 4 seasons in.

        • I stopped watching around 4 seasons as well. Walter became just another cog in the meth machine, they lost that dimension that made me interested in Walter himself. It used to be about people but it changed and became more about the ins and outs of high volume meth sales and the side drama didn't interest me anymore.

I also didn't like how Walt's wife took to criminal life so quickly and so well. I'm not sure what I would have done differently with her though.

Carrie from The King of Queens and Deborah from Everybody Loves Raymond are some real stand-out bitches, I hate 'em.

Yeah agree with you about Deborah.

What is it with writers making the wives of the male protagonists such dull, nagging kill-joys with no personality or hobbies aside from expressing their disappointment with their husbands?

It must be done to please the female audience. I'm guessing most females can't see how bitchy and unreasonable these characters are. They watch these women and see it as "she's the smart one who solves all the problems that dumb-dumb gets himself into(just like ME!), she does so much work around the house, he's a big dumb slob, he SHOULD help out, working outside the home is so easy and housework is so hard...blah...blah..."

I always hated Deborah so much because Ray has a full time job and provides well and she is constantly on his ass about helping around the house. The house is a mess, she can't cook and their kids are in school all day so what exactly is she doing all day while he's at work? What the fuck is she so stressed out about? What a bitch! But I guess most females like her character.

I agree with you on Carrie. I never liked Everybody Loves Raymond so certain aspects of the show thankfully never stuck with me. The character I was most annoyed with was Raymond's overbearing mother.

Nina from House of Anubis, not sure if you're familiar with it. She has moments where I wonder why she chose to act that way. Her reactions to events are all the same. What else? Dr Ryan from NCIS, I just do not like her character. Daniel from Revenge, be a man and Victoria, she gives me the chills.

Sure~ I hardly ever watch live action shows so I can't give an example about those but I can give an example from the anime Kimi ni Todoke. I love watching romance anime but this one has the main female character as way too shy, scared and wimpish who happens to like a guy who is very popular with everyone and perfect in every way. It makes both of their characters boring, predictable and generic. Compare that to Hinata from Naruto and she is cute shy but still gathered courage to change and be strong via liking Naruto who happens to be a silly acting idiot who still works hard. Its way more interesting that way.

JD and Elliot from Scrubs. That's who was in the back of my mind. I like the show, but those two have moments which annoy the hell out of me. Ross from Friends does it too. Oh, and Rachel is pretty annoying.

        Yes!

JD and Elliot - absolutely agree with you. Plus JD's insufferable monologues over everything. The 'end-of-episode moral-of-the-story' tripe is patronising. If I wanted to watch a parable I wouldn't be watching a sitcom.
