Do you believe that there were once giants?

Many religions have told stories of giants or Nephilim. I've been seeing documentaries and reading stories on these beings that tells of how they may have once existed. What do you think? Do yo believe giants were once real on this earth? And if so, why?

No. The height of human beings is directly related to the gravity on this planet. Taller animals tend to have to be much bulkier (elephants, dinosaurs, whales, etc.) to counteract gravity.

A fifty foot human with the same anatomy as us (but bigger) would die pretty much instantly.

my first thought was "they might be giants" the band hahaha

YES. The smaller the planet, the larger things on it can be. It's the same basic reason that Olympus Mons, the largest mountain on Mars, is almost three times as tall as Mt Everest. Anyway, humans aren't the most stable animals to begin with (the whole walking on two legs thing leads to a lot of falling), and I don't think our skeletal system would hold up at a much larger scale.

Also, you can't just scale up our circulatory system and have it work the same way. In fact, I've read that people with gigantism, which can cause people to be up to about 9 ft tall, often have circulatory problems.

      • dappled

Circulatory is where I was going, yeah. The heart already works hard. If you increase our average height by nine times in one dimension, the increase in blood is cubic because we'd increase proportionally in all three dimensions. Nine times in one dimension is 81 times in two, and 729 times in three.

Volume is one problem but suddenly you're pumping the blood to fifty feet above the floor, not five feet something. It would be harder even if the volume of blood was the same but it's not. The volume is massively larger and the distance is another multiplier.

I feel like I'm ruining some fairy stories, though!

        • disthing

Wouldn't the heart also be much larger and thus capable of pumping an increased quantity of blood around the body? Hence why the animals you mentioned (Elephants, whales) all have huuuumungous hearts :/ If you're scaling a person up, you scale their heart up too.

It would indeed, but if you look at elephants and whales they counteract gravity by being longer and bulkier rather than taller and slimmer like humans. Gravity mainly works vertically so tall and thin is exactly the wrong shape.

If you look at the upper limit of tall and thin on this planet (probably a giraffe), they have all kinds of enhancements just to survive (in particular to stop massive blood flow when they lower their heads). They are about as far as evolution can go in the tall/thin category. Going even five feet taller would be incredibly difficult. Scaling up to fifty feet tall is a near impossibility.

Also with a giraffe, half its height is neck or above, but half its mass (which gravity acts on) very much isn't. It's not the same with humans; most of the weight of our bodies is in the top half. We're just not equipped to be fifty feet tall in our present form.

Ah OK, I see what you mean.

T Rex's were about 20 ft tall and on two legs, but definitely longer than they were tall. We'd just have to evolve to be bulkier and have a lower centre of gravity - maybe get back on all 4s? :D

Ancient tribes discovered bones of extinct animals and assumed they belong to giants.

Take a look at a mammoth's skull. There's a big gap in the center for the trunk. Ancient tribes saw this giant skull and thought that the hole was a giant eye socket in the middle of the head. That's the birth of the myth of a cyclops.

    Gerard the Giant. Lol!

I think it's quite possible. I read somewhere that giant skeletons had been unearthed, but as usual, some people thought it was a hoax. There are many things about ancient history that are shrouded in mystery... Oh, I don't think Nephilim are the same as giants. Weren't they supposed to be a order of angels?

Giants are a statistical illusion, man. If one of them spins me around I'll acquire pubic lice! How am I going to explain pubic lice?!

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • westoptic

Yes. There were huge, prehistoric mammals and other animals that were like, huge beyond imagination, like just massive, because of the climate and such. I think giants are a very real possibility, either they're a sub species that died off or they were a mutation of humans. I think they were probably between 10-15 feet tall, at most. Nothing like the fairy tales say, but definitely a lot larger than a normal human.

I read somewhere that humans are getting perpetually shorter so it's possible that one point we were giants. But I don't really know.

This one book I have says humans are actually staying the same size and the reason houses used to be shorter is cuz it keeps houses warm better if they're short but if that's true, I don't know why houses didn't continue to be short.

    >>>>>> ALL ARE LIES AND SCIENTIFICALLY IMPOSSIBLE.

These are MYTHS and LEGENDS, stories MADE UP.
    They are NOT real.

The closest 'human' reported as a giant was in fact about 7 to 8 feet high. This is NOT the image of a giant that is presented in the Bible. ie Giants that survived the great flood that could just stand up in the ocean and survive by height alone! Ridiculous.

Another myth, is that some discovered ancient GIANT bones have been hidden by scientists and are not in museums! What the hell? I just want everyone to fully understand, SCIENCE IS ONLY TOO HAPPY TO TELL PEOPLE THE ENTIRE TRUTH. No one is hiding anything that just does not exist to begin with. That would be crazy and not scientific. Science deals with TRUTH not myth.

    NO GIANTS ok.

The Bible does not state or imply that there were giants tall enough to stand up above the ocean and survive the great flood. Don't know where you got that from. It says only Noah and his family survived, and they were in an ark (boat).

Many historians think things like this may have one exsisted and there has been a few true about things like this. An example is the greeks have records of babys born with one eye. A common genetic deformity in that time. Also in midevil time the average hieght was sinificuintly shortee and everyone was size of a young child. Modern day many deformitys come from places like india areas like that tend to have it more commanly. So these back than could be miscunstrude as devils and deamons or even gods.

I am sure there were some people that were tall for their time, like when most people were 5 feet tall, and they were 7 or even 8 feet talk due to an untreated tumor on their pituitary gland. I am sure they were few and far between. Then humans did as humans will do they built it up into a fiction. As for a race of giants, I say no.

I'm willing to believe in telepaths and witches as well as other beings of the like. I think that it's totally possible that there are people out there that have such a deep connection to the universe and certain forces of which that they are able to do things that seem impossible.

I don't disbelieve science although I don't trust scientists wholeheartedly due to the many lies that have been sold under the header of science, but as far as modern science goes I feel that we have barely scratched the surface in what is a huge and vast universe of possibilities. I'd rather die a fool then live a life believing that this is it.

But I don't think we were all giants once. That contradicts much of what I understand about evolution.
