Well it is vital especially for us non native English speakers.
Sectors of tourism, publishing, finance, computers and related industries rely heavily on English due to Anglophone trade ties.
Air traffic control and shipping movements are almost all conducted in English even Domestic air travel routes.
Many international businesses conduct their businesses in English even ones who originated from an Non-anglophone country examples include Philips (Dutch), Nokia (Finnish), etc.
English is a working language even between countries whose language isn't English. An example is when I lived within metres (well it was basically across the road), when we wanted to shop or talk to our German neighbours, English was commonly used though we Dutch are more likely to converse in German than Germans trying to speak Dutch.
English in schools is compulsory in many countries. In some school systems, we would have a class dedicated to learning the English language in Primary levels and as we approach middle and highschool levels - we have the option to continue some of our subjects in English. Eg. Maths class in English, followed by General Sciences in German, etc.
Give translation software 20 years or so. I doubt it will be necessary to learn more than one at that point.
I only speak 3, but I don't think being multilingual is something that is necessary, unless your moving to a foreign country.
I'm bilingual and now wish I hadn't put up so much resistance as a child... I would be speaking at least 4 languages :D
The more, the better.
It's not absolutely necessary, but I do think that there are just more possibilities and opportunities in life for those that can communicate with more people.
I love the fact that one of the lasting legacies of the British Empire is the English language. An international language for sure.
I think it's important for native English speakers to learn a second language. It makes you a better person.
Yes, and I wish that I had learned a second language earlier on in school instead of in the 9th grade because by that time I was well beyond any ability to retain any of it.
